A child’s nervous system isn’t something they can calm down by themselves just because we tell them to. 🧠💔

They co-regulate first. Then they learn to self-regulate.

Co-regulation isn’t about fixing the problem or stopping the tears right away. It’s about using your calm to invite their chaos to settle. It’s a biological need, not a parenting technique.

When we consistently offer a regulated presence we aren’t just stopping a tantrum. We are wiring their brain for secure attachment.

We are teaching their body that:
🔹 You are safe with me.
🔹 You don’t have to carry this alone.
🔹 Even when this big feeling passes, I’ll still be here.

And when a child knows, deep in their body, that they are safe and seen, the tension melts. That's when the shoulders drop, the breath deepens, and the smiles return :)

Art is a life raft when your nervous system needs an outlet. Realizing you don't need to have it all figured out, you can just create something that can hold space for grief, rage, and hope all at once. That's what the studio is for. Some days the state of the world feels heavy and the art puts you back together.

Keep creating. Keep caring. Keep going.

Thrilled to finally hold this in my hands! A much anticipated copy of the newly released book 'Materials and Media in Art Therapy: Contemporary Theory and Practice' edited by Cathy Moon. I'm deeply honored to contribute to Chapter 12 alongside so many talented colleagues.

Creating this mixed media artwork was an act of time travel and a chance to fully immerse myself in the warmth of memories—back to afternoons playing with siblings and cousins in our large garden, eating juicy jaman fruit, and resting among fallen franjipani flowers. This memory, like so many from the time, feels lovingly preserved by the warm embrace of my aunt.

Grateful for the anonymous artisan in Karachi whose handcrafted vinyl stickers add the perfect texture and frame, and to the legendary Sohail Rana, whose music is the soundtrack to my childhood. 🌸🍃
