Sip, Savour, and Stay Sharp! 🍷🧀 They say some things only get better with age—and that includes our residents, fine wine, and artisanal cheese!

Did you know your favourite pairing might be a secret weapon for your health?

Recent studies from Iowa State University suggest that responsible consumption of red wine and cheese can actually help protect against age-related cognitive decline.
Cheese has been also identified as a top protector for long-term mental acuity.🧀

And red wine has been linked to improvements in fluid intelligence and problem-solving.🍷

Beyond the science, sharing a glass is a wonderful way to boost your mood and strengthen relationships. ❤️🧀🍷

🐈‍⬛Pet visits and animal-assisted therapy provide significant emotional, cognitive, and physical benefits for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.🐈

These programs, which often feature dogs, cats, or other trained animals, are designed to reduce agitation, improve mood, and enhance the quality of life for residents. 🐈

🗝️Key Benefits for Alzheimer’s Residents at our Pioneer Elder Care properties:

Reduction in Agitation and Anxiety: The calming presence of a pet can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and irritability in dementia patients.🌱
Improved Socialization and Communication: Residents who are often non-communicative or withdrawn may open up, chat, and interact more when a therapy animal is present.

Memory Stimulation and Reminiscence: Interacting with animals can act as a trigger for positive memories, encouraging residents to share stories about pets they owned in the past.
🐕🐶🐱🐈
Tactile and Physical Stimulation: Petting, brushing, provides gentle exercise and improves fine motor skills.
Reduced “Sundowning”: Pet therapy has been known to help manage “sundown syndrome,” a period of late-afternoon confusion and agitation common in dementia patients.💙❤️

Memory, music and fitness went hand in hand today at Chapel Heights!🧘‍♂️🧘‍♀️

There is nothing like bringing music into the mix with a classic tune through our Chapel Heights “Java Music Program” designed for older adults to promote cognitive function, relaxation, and social interaction.

Next up? Our popular chair yoga class with Jayne providing gentle movements, balance and mindful breathing - all from the comfort of a chair for our residents.

💃🕺Dancing, even in the advanced stages of dementia, offers a powerful non-pharmacological way to support physical, emotional and social health.🪩

For those with severe cognitive decline, it serves as a critical medium for non-verbal communication and “relational citizenship,” allowing them to remain connected through their bodies when language fails.

Key benefits include:

🧠 reduces agitation, anxiety and depression
🧠 promotes the release of “feel-good” hormones
🧠 fosters a sense of belonging and self-expression
🧠 improves balance, gait and mobility

Our specialized dementia and Alzheimer’s residences combine expert care, meaningful routines, and inclusive meaningful and engaging experiences with genuine connection in environments where our residents feel safe, valued and at home.

Geoff began his art training in Vancouver, B.C. in classes at the Federation of Canadian Artists, Emily Carr, and in the Graphic Design & Illustration Program at Capilano College.

Relocating to New York City to train at the Art Students League from 1997 to 2002, Geoff painted from the live human model in figurative realist classes before working in the abstract painting studios of William Scharf and Frank O’Cain. A figurative abstract process took hold in his work. Exploring linocuts and monotypes in Richard Pantell’s printmaking studio prompted new approaches in his painting.

Geoff currently lives and paints in St. Catharines. He has taught part-time in the Graphic Design Program at Niagara College and at the Willow Arts Community, and has served on the board for the Niagara Artists Centre, and has been a guest artist at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.

His paintings have been shown in Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and Niagara, New York City, Washington DC, Minneapolis, Sweden, Norway, and Trinidad.
