1. Why did you become a doula? 2. What do you love most about the work?
3. Are there practices you do not readily or happily support during labour/birth, like epidural, cesarean, and induction?
4. How do you involve/include my partner during labour and birth?
5. What’s your relationship like with care providers and hospital staff?
6. How do you handle the unexpected at a birth?
7. What techniques do you use to help me through labour and birth?
8. Have you attended a birth at my chosen birth location (specific hospital, birth center, or home)?
9. Do you work solo or with another doula(s)?
10. What’s your backup arrangement like? Do I get to meet them?
11. How many prenatal meetings and postpartum visits do you provide?
12. When do you go on call for me?
13. What if I go into labour before or after your on-call time?
14. When will you join me in labour?
15. How long after I give birth do you stay with me?
16. Can I call you anytime, or do you have “office hours”?
ASK YOURSELF AFTER THE INTERVIEW:
1. Did I feel comfortable with this doula?
2. Did my partner?
3. How would I compare each doula’s level of knowledge and experience?
4. Do I feel confident about this doula’s abilities?
5. What’s my gut telling me?

LISTENING TO YOUR INTUITION IS SO IMPORTANT HERE, AS THE RELATIONSHIP SHOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE AND EASY.

MIDWIVES and DOULAS work together to support your birth. I often hear people say that they do not need a doula because they have a midwife. I thought the same thing when I was pregnant with my first child. It was our midwife who explained that having doula support would help us get closer to our goals. Because midwives have so much clinical work to do during your labour- they are often not able to provide quite as much hands on comfort as a doula can. Doulas are not performing any blood pressures checks, fetal monitoring or physical exams so their support is exclusively focused on making you more comfortable. Midwives are the experts when it comes to physiological birth and best practices to ensure a safe delivery. Be sure you are informed when preparing for your labour and birth. Today is the International Day of the Midwife. Please share your midwifery love and shoutouts below!! ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Becoming a new parent can feel very confusing. Learning to understand your baby’s states (or moods), can really help you to feel more confident and build up the skills to see what baby needs and when. This guide is just that- a guide to the average states of newborns. Your beautiful babe comes with their own personality and individuality. Be curious and be kind with yourself as you learn your baby’s cues. And most of all- lean on your network for support. If you don’t have that type of network- reach out. There are so many of us waiting to help and guide the powerful instincts you already have within you. ❤️

We love to hear from DADS!

Sometimes partners can feel unsure about what it will be like to have another person in the room while Mom gives birth.
We get it.

Part of the role of a Doula is to empower both parents. Doulas never take the place of a partner. We enhance their role in the birth. Watching partners learn and develop confidence with guidance from their Doula is a beautiful thing.

We work to bring the parents closer together by teaching techniques and practising for the big event. When you can get all of the anxieties out into the open, both parents can feel more at ease.

Love from a beautiful family:

“She came to my home and laboured with me until we were ready to go to the hospital. She stayed with me until I gave birth and made sure I was settled with the baby before she left. Laura came prepared with a bag full of tricks and items to help comfort me, and boy were they ever useful! Clearly this wasn't her first rodeo!”

We get asked this question ALL the time and it’s a great one. What does a Birth Doula actually DO?

Your Doula is part of your care team for pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Other core care team members may include a GP, OB, or midwives. A Doula’s primary role is to focus exclusively on your comfort during labour. They do this by actively providing physical, mental, and educational support for the duration, alongside your other care team members.

Giving birth is an intense and powerful experience and the reality is that not every aspect is within your control. Your Doula supports you in this way by helping you advocate for YOUR wishes during labour. Because of the relationship and trust you build with your Doula in the time you spend together beforehand, your Doula is able to guide you towards an empowering birth experience when the time arrives. Doulas are warm, non-judgemental and are there to value your wishes above all.
