Honouring world mental health day. Take a moment and give yourself some compassion, space, or just a deep breath.

If family holidays make your inner peace disappear faster than the mashed potatoes, you’re not alone.

Boundaries aren’t about controlling them — they’re about protecting you.

When you say “I won’t engage in that conversation,” you’re not being rude — you’re being regulated.

What’s one boundary you’re holding firm on this Thanksgiving?

Here is your yearly reminder to care deeply for yourself.

Mother’s Day can be a very hard day for many. If you have lost your mother or are a mother who has lost a child, are coping with infertility or loss, have a complicated or estranged relationship with a mother or child, this day will require extra care and compassion. Here are some ways to support yourself:

- Avoid social media. It may mean deleting the apps and then re-installing them tomorrow.
- If you are grieving, make space for this. Find a way to connect with your lost loved one by journaling, going into nature, or bringing out a photo or token and talking to your loved one.
-Set boundaries: give yourself full permission to avoid gatherings if it’s too hard.
- Be with your emotions in the moment. Maybe you are a mother who is being celebrated, but you are also grieving a loss. Use mindfulness to engage with the varying emotional experiences today and honour them all.
- Engage in a self-compassionate practice: hand on heart, say something along the lines of “this feels hard because it is hard. May I be gentle with myself today”

If only we could bury all of our pain and trauma, and have it die in the murky swamp of our unconscious. Not so; what we bury, we bury alive. It’s always scarier in the dark though, and when we actually start facing the things we have repressed, we no longer have to fear that they’ll crawl out of the dark when we least expect it.

Happy Halloween!

Credit - I don’t recall where I first heard this quote, but I believe it’s taken from Freud who said “unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.”
