After 35 years of working extensively with clients , helping them to relieve their stress and improve their musculoskeletal condition, I have developed a strong viewpoint about health and ageing.
We all will age and eventually have to let go of our tenancy here on earth but we can age well or we can age badly.
Ageing well involves consistent, progressive physical activity, the consumption of natural, whole foods and the avoidance,as much as possible, of man made processed food, seeing the glass half full, learning to relax on cue, and appreciating who we have and what we have right now.
I believe that pursuing this path leads to a healthier, happier state of being.
Wishing you all the best on your journey.

Last week's heavy snowfall brought a number of clients to my practice, presenting with lower back pain. Most had been shoveling but some were also using snowblowers. It's possible that we'll have at least one or two more storms before spring arrives so here are a few tips to employ next time snow visits us:

1) Use your arms and legs and not your back to lift the shovel. Bend knees, scoop, drive upwards with legs, then drop the snow where you want to put it.
2) Avoid twisting your back.
3) Alternate your grip every 10-20 shovels.
4) If the snow is wet and heavy, lift smaller amounts.
5) Take frequent pauses: Shovel for 5-10 minutes, then pause a minute or two. If you feel any muscle groups beginning to fatigue or ache, take a longer break and hydrate.
6) Have a long hot bath when finished.

*When using a snowblower, if you have to maneuver it , use your leg muscles to push the machine into position.

Last week, I put out a lawn chair and rested every half hour or so, and sipped some hot tea and watched the snow coming down. It made the work more enjoyable. 4 hours of shoveling made my arms ache the next day but my back was pain free.

Final tip: move to Florida!!!
