Head cold support in clinic today

This little / big guy came in with his dad looking for some relief. From a TCM perspective, he’s in a Shao Yang stage… that “in-between” phase where the body is trying to decide whether to push a pathogen outward or let it move deeper.

Right now, there’s no fever, but he’s feeling quite chilled, which tells us the body hasn’t shifted into a full heat pattern.

Needles weren’t exactly his favourite, but he was brave and did great. We used a few points to open the nasal passages and support the lungs (including LU5 to help clear and regulate Lung Qi).

He also received:
• Gentle gua sha
• Light fire cupping (no strong heat signs showed, so we kept it mild and supportive)
• And he was the first to try my new TDP lamp

The TDP lamp is a great alternative to moxa!! It provides deep, penetrating warmth to support Yang Qi and help the body fight off cold pathogens.

And as you can see… he was instantly out cold.

The body knows how to heal, we just give it the right support.

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy involving the burning of dried mugwort (Artemisia argyi) on or near specific acupuncture points to stimulate Qi, enhance circulation, and warm the body. It treats conditions like breech pregnancies, chronic pain, arthritis, and digestive issues. Methods include indirect (using heat sticks) or direct (burning on skin) application.

Key Aspects of Moxibustion:
How it Works: The burning herb, or "moxa," produces intense heat that penetrates skin to stimulate meridians, often inducing a radiating, relaxing warmth.

Types:
Indirect Moxibustion: More common, involving holding a lighted moxa stick near the skin or placing it on an acupuncture needle.

Direct Moxibustion: A tiny cone of moxa is placed directly on the skin. It can be scarring (causes blistering) or non-scarring.

Uses: Commonly used for turning breech babies (usually at 34-38 weeks), pain relief, strengthening the immune system, and treating cold-related ailments.

Benefits: It is believed to strengthen the blood, stimulate Qi, and expel "cold" from the body.
Safety: While non-invasive, it can cause burns or skin irritation if not performed correctly. It should be administered by a trained practitioner.
