There are moments in my role as Executive Director that stay with me forever. This is not because they were part of a plan or a policy, but because they were a gift — unexpected, deeply human, and profoundly moving.
Today I was invited by one of our residents, Rolly, and his best friend, Jeff, to join them on an adventure. Rolly is 91 years young but with failing health it was time to plan! A Sea-doo adventure was something that they had dreamed of doing together, just as they had done in the past. They wanted to try it once again - just one more time. I was humbled to be asked along.
The day was hot and humid with a soft breeze rippling across Lake Nipissing. The La Vase river flowed effortlessly into the lake. This was the route of the voyageurs, the brave, the fearless, and today Rolly was no exception!
As he mounted his Sea-doo and ventured out onto the water, time seemed to slow down. I watched in awe! It wasn’t about the distance he traveled, or how fast he moved — it was about being present, being with Jeff and about feeling alive in the moment.
As I sat on the sea-doo with Jeff, trailing alongside Rolly, I found myself deeply moved — not just by the beauty of the surroundings, but by the privilege of being included in this deeply personal experience. This wasn’t just a boat ride. It was a moment of closure, of peace, of fulfilment. I was there, not as an administrator, but as a fellow human being.
It reminded me that our work in senior living is not only about providing care. It’s about connection. It’s about showing up — not just when there are decisions to be made, but when there’s life to be lived.
Being a part of this resident’s adventure today is one of the greatest honours that I could imagine. It is a beautiful reminder that even in the later chapters of life, there are still moments of joy, of wonder, and of deep meaning.
To Rolly and Jeff, thank you for your invitation, your trust, your courage, and your light. You reminded me of what my work is truly about. ❤️
