The History of the Empire


The Empire, North Bay's Landmark Retirement Residence, started life in 1927 as the Empire Hotel. Built as one of the most luxurious hotels in Ontario’s near north region, the Empire hosted the Queen on her visit to Canada in 1951. Because of its elaborate architectural features, the hotel attracted the movie industry and was featured in several notable movies including

Captains of the Clouds, a war epic staring James Cagney in 1942. The former hotel was completely renovated bringing the building back to its initial splendor and in 1997 the Empire took on its new life as a retirement home. The Empire now boosts 157 luxury suites with breathtaking architectural detailing, ballrooms, dining rooms and lounges that rival the finest hotels in the country.

One of our residents, Ernie Romain turned 100 years young today! He had a special party with his Empire family, friends, and our staff. Mayor Al McDonald dropped by to bring him a special proclamation from the city. This is a video of Ernie addressing the crowd will make you smile. Ernie has been enjoying life at The Empire for the past 12 years 😀

Residents enjoying The Empire Warms Hearts fundraiser concert for the North Bay Warming Center...tribute artist Gavan Rousseau played the music of Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, & Buddy Holly.

The Empire staff and Management have been nominated for the #ALS ice bucket challenge. Thank you to everyone who came out to support such a great cause. The residents not only came for the event and watch the staff get "dumped" but they also raised money for ALS. Here is our General Manager Ariane Savard challenging other North Bay retirement home ; Barclay House and Marina Point and also our sister home in Peterborough Rubidge Retirement Residence... Good luck!

The Empire Staff and Management have been challenged to do the ALS ice bucket challenge. It was a fun day for all and for a great cause. The residents really enjoyed coming out to not only watch but donate too. Here is our General Manager Ariane Savard accepting the challenge on everyone's behalf and in turn challenging the other Retirement homes here is North Bay; Marina Point and Barclay House and also our sister home in Peterborough, Rubidge Retirement Residence! Good luck ! :)
