Community Advisory: Collaborative Emergency Service Scenario Based Training on November 5, 2025

The North Bay Police Service (NBPS) will be conducting a real-time joint emergency response training exercise in North Bay, Ontario, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, in the vicinity of Ski Club Road between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Emergencies require well-coordinated and efficient responses, and event simulations are an effective way to practice essential skills and communication procedures.

The NBPS advises the public that a variety of emergency services will be participating, including North Bay Professional Firefighters, Ontario Provincial Police - North East Region, 22 Wing CFB North Bay, and the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Members of the public should not be alarmed by an increased presence of emergency personnel and vehicles in the area.

The training exercise is not expected to result in any road closures or disruptions to daily activities. The area will be clearly marked, and the exercise is taking place in a location with low vehicle traffic. However, as always, residents are asked to use caution when near emergency vehicles and crews.

At the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC), we are committed to reducing the incidence and impact of delirium through a range of coordinated strategies across both outpatient and inpatient settings.

In our outpatient programs, Nipissing Specialized Geriatric Services play a vital role in diagnosing and treating individuals with cognitive changes. These services emphasize education, caregiver support, and health promotion to enhance the well-being of older adults at risk.

In our inpatient settings, our well-established Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) team supports patients across acute care, rehabilitation, and some ALC-LTC designated units. The HELP Elder Life Specialist collaborates closely with a dedicated team of volunteers—who contribute an average of 200 hours per month—to deliver targeted, senior-focused delirium prevention interventions seven days a week.

Early identification of patients at risk of delirium or functional decline is a key organizational priority. Our multidisciplinary teams—including the HELP, MACE geriatrics team, Geriatric Emergency Management, Behavioural Supports Ontario, Seniors Mental Health, and Recreation Therapy—work together to assess risk and deliver timely, individualized care.

Today the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is sharing some important changes the community can expect at the hospital over the next six months. These same changes were shared yesterday by NBRHC leadership with staff and will include an increase in parking, changes to how some services are accessed, and staff layoffs.

In order to meet budget requirements, NBRHC is making the difficult, but necessary, adjustments to its budget and operations for an annual reduction of $5.6M when fully implemented.

JOB LOSS

40 positions (full-time and part-time roles): it is anticipated that the number of employees impacted could be much lower based on new positions (14 roles) offers of early exit, retirements, attrition and movement to other positions.

PARKING RATE INCREASES

applies to all public rates effective January 1, 2026: one time exit pass will be increasing by $1.25 to $7.25. Other parking options include Day Pass $10.00; 7 day pass $30.00; 14 day pass $45.00; and 30 day pass $65.00. (Lost ticket pays Day Pass rate $10.00)

PHYSICIAN LEADERSHIP MODEL CHANGE

reducing the number of physician leadership positions effective January 1, 2026: reduction of 20% with no change in physician numbers.
“We have done everything in our power to meet our financial target and find savings equal to 2% of our budget,” says Paul Heinrich, President and CEO.

“Hospitals face a number of complex challenges including operational pressures, financial constraints and an increased demand for services,” Heinrich says. “Our priority is always to protect and maintain access to health care.”

Heinrich says it is important to openly acknowledge the stress this causes for our staff, physicians, volunteers, and patients. “NBRHC is focused on working collaboratively with the Government of Ontario to find both funding and operational solutions to create a more innovative and sustainable future for the communities we serve.”

_

Today (September 30th) at NBRHC our flags will be flying at half-mast to recognize of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. This day honours the children who never returned home and the survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

Today is also recognized as Orange Shirt Day, an initiative by Indigenous communities to raise awareness about the intergenerational trauma caused by residential schools and to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. You can read more about the artist behind this year's shirt at NBRHC at the link below.

We are honoured to feature artwork by Kirk, this year’s Orange Shirt artist. His painting tells the story of a young girl sent to a residential school, her spirit held by the quiet presence of her parents and the strength of her culture. Through his work, Kirk honours the resilience of Indigenous children and families and reminds us that while the scars of the past remain, so too do strength, spirit, and love.

T-shirts featuring this powerful design are available for $25, with all proceeds supporting Mînowacihewin - Regional Service for Indigenous People at NBRHC. Available at Main St. Gifts & Variety (Main East Lobby, Level 200) or through the Foundation Office at 705-495-8125 (credit card only, large orders).

We invite our community to show their support by wearing orange and reflecting on the history and ongoing impact of residential schools.
