🐾 Core Vaccines Matter—And Leptospirosis Is One You Shouldn’t Skip 🐾

💧 What is leptospirosis (lepto)?
Lepto is a bacterial infection spread through water, soil, or surfaces contaminated with urine from infected wildlife—like raccoons, rodents, deer, and potentially other wildlife. That means your dog doesn’t have to be deep in the wilderness to be at risk—even puddles can be a source.

⚠️ Why is it so important?
Leptospirosis can cause severe kidney and liver failure in dogs, and it can progress quickly. Even more important—it’s zoonotic, meaning it can be passed from animals to humans.

💉 Why vaccinate?
Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog from this serious disease. Cats are highly resistant to leto compared to dogs. With increasing cases, the lepto vaccination has become a core vaccine once again and key part of keeping pets and humans safe.

📅 Stay up to date on your dog’s vaccines and chat with your vet about what’s right for your pet! Ask us about local cases and prevalence (recent confirmed case on Salt Spring Island via Lepto positive tested rat and dog)

🐾 Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs: What You Should Know 🐾

Mast cell tumors (MCTs) are one of the most common skin tumors in dogs—and they can be tricky!

• They are called “great pretenders”, and can look like anything — small lumps on top of the skin, raised bumps under the skin, or even lesions that change size day to day
• Some may appear harmless and stay the same size for months, while others can behave aggressively turning red and growing fast
• These tumors release histamine, which can cause redness, swelling, or even stomach upset

Why early detection matters 👇
• Any new lump or bump should be checked by a vet
• A simple fine needle aspirate sample (FNA) 💉can often give us answers quickly with cytology. No, we can’t definitively diagnose your pets mass off of what it ‘looks like’
• Sometimes, we may need to sedate your pet and remove part of the lump for histopathology 🔬
• Early diagnosis = more treatment options and better outcomes and determining extent of disease (did it spread to local tissues like lymph nodes)

Treatment options may include:
• Surgical removal is the preferred treatment method and allows for “tumor grading”. The lower the tumor grade, the better the prognosis
• In some cases, additional therapies like chemotherapy or radiation are required if the tumor cannot be fully removed or has spread to local lymph nodes

🐶 Bottom line: Don’t wait and watch—check that lump!💉

🦷🪥✨ Setting up for a dental procedure in the clinic! We perform multiple dentals weekly.

• Teeth are like icebergs — what you see above the gumline can look perfectly healthy, but with an X-ray, below the surface there may be significant bone loss and decay.

• We use an ultrasonic scaler to clean teeth — it safely removes plaque and tartar. Manual removal and scraping of tartar risks dental chips, fractures, or even damage to enamel.

• After scaling, teeth are polished to smooth the surface and help slow future plaque buildup
• We monitor your pets vitals closely throughout the entire procedure
• Prevention is everything! Daily brushing with a pet-safe toothpaste is the gold standard for keeping those pearly whites healthy. 🪥

• Ask our veterinarians about dental disease and dental products that are VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) certified — they’re scientifically proven to help reduce plaque and tartar.
