The sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D. Did you know that 90% of our Vit D is synthesised through exposure to sun. The further you live from the equator the less you are exposed to UVB light from the sun. This is especially the case in the winter when not only is the period of daylight shortened compaired to the summer months, but also most of your skin is covered to help protect against the cold. This means that our main source of Vitamin D production has been vastly deminished and you susceptibility to deficiency is increased. Vitamin D deficiency is known to be associated with many ailments and diseases including bone and muscle weakness, influenza, depression, anxiety, diabetes, and some types of cancers. The good news is Vitamin D supplements are cheap and have a low risk of toxicity when taking the recommended amount. Food sources of Vitamin D include fish, eggs, organ meats, and fortified dairy. If you are concerned with you Vitamin D levels chat with your doctor about getting your serum (blood) levels checked to see if supplementing is the right decision for you.
