Evolution:
• In about 1999 we began offering popular education courses around the topic of “Globalization” trying to get a handle on the nature & effect of this phenomenon on our culture. We talked about a broad range of developments including, the nature of our economic system, the effects of globalization on community, the history of indigenous communities
in BC and the effects of “contact’ on their way of life, and the growing problem of addiction. The Organization was called “A Community Aware and operated in the Commercial Drive –area.
• In 2005 we narrowed our focus to examine addiction, in its widest sense. The course title gives an indication of our intent: “The Globalization of Addiction”, It’s Not About Drugs.”
• In 2017 we transitioned into a community dedicated to the practice of meditation. We wanted to understand what we needed to do to achieve a sense of personal well-being rather than what led to a deterioration in our sense of well-being. What is our “Modus operandi”
• We meet ‘online’ to meditate, to review and discuss material dealing with the practice of “Mindfulness Meditation”. In addition, we offer a formal 9-week program of instruction in mindfulness meditation. Programs:
• We meet twice a month (every 2nd and 4th Thursday evening at 7pm) for an hour and 15 minutes plus and optional 15-minute period for discussion. We meditate, review educational material and discuss that material and our individual practice progress & problems.
• Once a year we conduct a 9-week course on Mindfulness Meditation, based on a text developed by eminent psychologists and modeled on the workshops developed & offered by John Kabat Zinn, the individual regarded as founder of the North American Mindfulness movement. .
• During the twice monthly sessions, we introduce a wide range of leading Western teachers of mindfulness meditation in order to experience their teaching style, to understand their individual emphasis and learn “to Hear” in their teachings the common message that they express in their own individual style. Costs:
• Monthly sessions are free.
• We ask for a maximum $30 donation to defray our costs. Pay what you can.
• The text is your expense (currently about $40) and can be purchased online or at any bookstore. Who Is Involved in the Community
