In this podcast episode, you’ll learn what’s actually happening when joints snap, crackle and pop; why it’s so common in dancers; and when you should be concerned about it.

Episode 109: Motor Imagery for Injured Dancers

Motor imagery (sometimes called mental rehearsal, mental imagery or visualization) is a powerful tool dancers can use to complement their physical training. It is especially valuable when dancer’s are not able to perform physically at 100%.

On this week’s podcast episode, we discuss the physical benefits of motor imagery - attenuation of strength loss, maintenance of range of motion and movement quality, preservation of motor planning, skill retention and more. You’ll also learn what the recommended protocols are for getting the most out of your motor imagery sessions.

Episode 108: Healthy Dancer Canada Conference Recap

Conference recap podcasts are always some of the most listened to episodes of the podcast (who knew!?!?) - so seeing as I’ve recently returned from the annual conference in Montreal - another recap it is!

The Healthy Dancer Canada Conference is unique in its small size and intimate nature, and I LOVE that they also incorporate dance performances into the conference. In this week’s podcast, I recap my time at the conference, and highlight some of my top takeaways.

If you’re not familiar with the Healthy Dancer Canal organization, highly recommend checking them out (and no, it’s not just for Canadians - we have plenty of international membership!).

Episode 107: Pelvic Floor Health for Dancers with Dr. Brooke Winder

Pelvic health issues are likely far more common in dancers than most people realize. Up to ~1/3 of professional dancers may experience symptoms of leakage, and the numbers are likely not that different for adolescent dancers.

On this week’s podcast I sit down with to discuss what types of pelvic floor symptoms we commonly see in dancers, what we know about the current research on pelvic dysfunction in dancers, as well as things dance teachers should be aware of when it comes to cueing and how it might influence pelvic floor muscles.

The final FREE webinar of 2025 is here and registration is officially NOW OPEN!

RAMP Up Your Dance Warm Up will teach you exactly how to design an efficient and effective warm up for your dancers, using the RAMP protocol which is used by elite athletes worldwide.

By now, everyone knows a warm-up is important, not just for injury prevention but also to prepare the body and mind for the demands of dance. But a lot of uncertainty still remains about what exactly should be included in a warm-up, and the best way to structure your warm-up for different settings.

In this webinar you’ll learn the physiological effects of a warm-up on various body systems including the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system; how to utilize the RAMP protocol to ensure you’re including all the key elements of a good warm up, as well as specific examples of movements and exercises to make sure you’re including in your warm up.

Episode 106: Pointe Readiness Assessments for Dancers

It’s that time of year when many aspiring ballet dancers are beginning their journey of dancing en pointe. But how do you know if/when a dancer is ready to progress to pointe work?

That’s where pointe readiness assessments come in. In this week’s podcast episode, I discuss the purpose of pre-pointe assessments, why I like to do them at the beginning of a dance season, and recent updates to the current dance science research on pointe readiness.

I’m curious. Did you have a pre-pointe assessment prior to getting your first pair of pointe shoes? 🩰 Let me know in the comments below 👇🏼

Episode 105: Breaking the Binary in Ballet with Anna Morgan

Cis gender girls account for 92% of the young people training in ballet in the UK, yet men still make up the vast majority of leadership positions (artistic directors, choreographers, etc) in the top 5 ballet companies. Why do we think this is?

In this week’s podcast episode, I’m joined by to chat about what she’s learned on this topic through her master’s research into gender equity in ballet leadership and training.

We also get into some of the issues that we see arise when ballet continues to be taught with a rigid, binary structure and ways we can make ballet a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all dancers, regardless of their gender identity.

Episode 104: Hip Dysplasia in Dancers

If you’ve ever had a baby, you may be familiar with hip dysplasia as infants are routinely screened for it in the first few months of life. But more mild cases may not be caught in infancy and can show up later in life - often in conjunction with other hip issues like pain, impingement, labral tears and more.

In this week’s podcast episode, I discuss hip dysplasia and why it matters for dancers. You’ll learn exactly what hip dysplasia is, how it’s diagnosed, and common complications that may arise for dancers with hip dysplasia. I also cover teaching and treatment techniques to help minimize the effects of hip dysplasia for dancers.
