Some women experience changes in their skin and hair as they go through pregnancy and the post-partum (after delivery) period.
How might pregnancy and new motherhood affect your skin?
✨Melasma – Also known as the “mask of pregnancy,” causing dark patches on the face.
✨Breakouts – Hormonal acne can flare up during or after pregnancy, especially around the jawline.
✨Stretch marks – From rapid skin stretching, often on the belly, hips, or breasts.
✨Dry, itchy skin – Caused by skin stretch, dehydration and hormonal changes.
✨Hair changes – Many women experience “pregnancy hair” where their hair feels and looks great during pregnancy! After delivery, it is very common and normal to go through a period of hair shedding- telogen effluvium- usually peaking around 3–4 months postpartum and in most cases resolving by one year.
✨Changing moles - it has long been believed that moles enlarge and darken in pregnancy BUT any changes in moles deserve to be treated as they would be in a non- pregnant person. Changing moles should always be seen by a doctor.
✨C-section scar - most scars heal very well. If a scar becomes elevated, bumpy or itchy, it may be a hypertrophic or keloid scar, and a dermatologist can help with injections to flatten it out.
Women and our bodies are truly amazing. It takes a lot of love and energy to grow a new person inside you!
