BBL is my not-so-secret weapon for even, glowing skin✨

But can BBL (or other types of IPL) be done in the summer?

We typically refer to the fall/winter as “laser season” because we avoid doing these treatments when patients are tanned.

That said, many people travel during the winter months!

As long as your skin is its natural shade or no more than 1 shade darker, it should be safe. And if you are getting a dark tan, keep in mind that it is undoing all the good work of your BBL! 😝

Your habits have more to do with determining what treatments are safe and when than the season.

Botox is becoming increasingly popular among men — and for good reason.💉

As we recognize Father’s Day, it’s worth highlighting that healthy, confident skin isn’t just for women. Many men are now turning to Botox to soften fine lines, prevent deeper wrinkles, and maintain a natural, well-rested appearance.

When performed carefully by an experienced dermatologist, Botox offers subtle, effective results with little to no downtime. It’s a quick treatment that can make a noticeable difference.

Skin health and self-care should be accessible to everyone — including dads.

Skinvive™ — our top pick for deep skin hydration and a long-lasting glow.

Unlike traditional fillers, Skinvive™ is an injectable hyaluronic acid skinbooster designed to improve hydration, smoothness, and radiance from within. Just a few microinjections can visibly reduce fine lines, improve skin texture, and boost elasticity—for results that can last up to 9 months.

This treatment is ideal for anyone with:
✨Dull or dehydrated skin
✨Fine lines or crepey texture
✨Mild skin laxity
✨Early signs of aging

When it comes to aesthetics, does 1+1=3?

I recently read a commentary article in JCMS written by my previous Medical Director and mentor, Dr. Jason Rivers. He examines the data behind the concept that aesthetic patients benefit from multi-modal treatments, concluding that the sum effect is greater than the individual parts.

Dr. Rivers discusses data from patients who had hyaluronic acid (HA) microdroplet treatments (Skinvive) alone or with other treatments such as fillers, neuromodulator or energy based devices. While the satisfaction rates of each of these procedures is high, the improvement seen when treatments are combined appears to be greater.

This is why cosmetic dermatologists advocate a 360-degree approach that takes into account all of the patient’s concerns and needs, and constructs a treatment journey- not a single transactional treatment. So, in the world of aesthetic medicine, 1+1 may indeed add up to 3!

Some women experience changes in their skin and hair as they go through pregnancy and the post-partum (after delivery) period.

How might pregnancy and new motherhood affect your skin?

✨Melasma – Also known as the “mask of pregnancy,” causing dark patches on the face.
✨Breakouts – Hormonal acne can flare up during or after pregnancy, especially around the jawline.
✨Stretch marks – From rapid skin stretching, often on the belly, hips, or breasts.
✨Dry, itchy skin – Caused by skin stretch, dehydration and hormonal changes.
✨Hair changes – Many women experience “pregnancy hair” where their hair feels and looks great during pregnancy! After delivery, it is very common and normal to go through a period of hair shedding- telogen effluvium- usually peaking around 3–4 months postpartum and in most cases resolving by one year.
✨Changing moles - it has long been believed that moles enlarge and darken in pregnancy BUT any changes in moles deserve to be treated as they would be in a non- pregnant person. Changing moles should always be seen by a doctor.
✨C-section scar - most scars heal very well. If a scar becomes elevated, bumpy or itchy, it may be a hypertrophic or keloid scar, and a dermatologist can help with injections to flatten it out.

Women and our bodies are truly amazing. It takes a lot of love and energy to grow a new person inside you!

A little Botox® goes a long way 💉✨

This transformation is a perfect example of how Botox® can smooth fine lines, soften expression wrinkles, and give the skin a naturally refreshed look—without changing you.

When done right, Botox® isn’t about freezing your face—it’s about relaxing overactive muscles to prevent deeper lines from forming, all while maintaining natural movement and expression. It’s quick, effective, and backed by years of clinical research.

Red light therapy, LED light therapy and low level laser light therapy (LLLLT) are photobiomodulation- changing biological outcomes using light energy.

A recent systemic review and meta-analysis found that there is promising data for photobiomodulation for androgenetic hair loss(male and female pattern hair loss). The studies that reported changes for other types of hair loss did not have sufficient statistical information for meta-analysis.

The conclusion: there is promising evidence that LED/LLLLT is helpful for androgenetic alopecia, but further study is required for other types of hair loss.

Follow up from last month’s case!

This patient developed allergic contact dermatitis to one of her tattoo dyes, leading to significant itch and discomfort in her tattoo. We treated the inflamed area with a targeted steroid injection and she continued with topicals at home. She is now itching-free, and her skin has settled. This will require ongoing care, but relief was achieved!

This lovely patient was kind enough to share their photo and experience. They had a tattoo 4 years ago and soon after experienced itching and lumpiness in the tattoo.

What’s going on?

Allergic contact dermatitis to tattoo dye!

Red is more highly allergenic than black dye, and they are reacting mostly to the red/purple component of the tattoo.

So, how do we manage this? They have tried topical corticosteroids without much improvement. I injected the inflamed component with steroids to try to calm it down, and this can be repeated. In severe cases, tattoos can be surgically excised. Laser tattoo can be risky because cases of systemic allergic contact dermatitis have been reported post laser as the allergenic tattoo dye is broken down and mopped up by the immune system, causing a worse, more widespread, rash.
