Hi folks!

Only one week left until my event Rain Song - Guided Meditation and Creative Workshop. I have 8 registered so far and room for a few more. I have prepared enough bamboo to accommodate 12 mindful crafters!

A few important notes…

- This guided meditation takes place at Silver Harbour Center at 4pm. It is located directly behind Harry Jerome on 22nd and Chesterfield. I am renting the room that I use for chair yoga but the senior centre closes at 4pm. This means I will be unable to accommodate late arrivals as once the door is locked I will be downstairs and unable to hear you knock. Please arrive a few minutes early to find a seat and get cozy.

- This space is wheelchair & walker accessible. There is a ramp outside to access the front door and assisted doors. There is also an elevator available to take you downstairs to access the room. There will be signs to direct you.

- This event is by donation, if you want to drop by and just join us for the 30-40 minute meditation and stretch and leave afterwards you are more than welcome.

- If you have any questions please feel free to reach out!

Enjoy your weekend! 🌟

Just over 2 weeks before my pop up event at Silver Harbour on Friday April 19th. My guarantee is that this will be a low stakes environment, you will enjoy some relaxation, and the crafting will require minimal effort (and is optional).

I’ve been offering accessible yoga to seniors across North and West Vancouver with North Shore Chair Yoga for 5 years. We practice mindfulness in the form of meditation, breathing exercises, and movement. I am cerfitied Yoga Instructor and ACE certified Group Fitness instructor and create experiences that combine traditional aspects of yoga with contemporary understandings of health and wellness, primarily for older participants and those with chronic illness, inflammation, or reduced mobility.

This event is for everyone, we will have a grounding exercise, guided breathing, and some light stretching before a short guided meditation with sound. ~40mins

This will be followed by the option to do some very light crafting where you have the option to fill your own sound instrument to take home and use as part of your practice of generating calm in your body and mind. ~20mins

There’s nothing to lose if you’re free at 4pm. You don’t even have to pay if you’re unable, no questions asked.

Please pre-register by sending an email to me at northshorechairyoga@gmail.com and come on the 9th!

Fun new event! Join me April 19th for a guided meditation followed by a crafting workshop where you will get to assemble a rain wand to take home. Suggested cost is $40 to help cover cost of materials and time but this event is PWYC (pay what you can) meaning no one will be questioned or turned away due to lack of funds!

Rain wands are used in my practice for aiding relaxation and are a simple tool for incorporating sound into your practice of meditation and mindfulness. No experience in crafting or yoga is necessary for this event!

Please pre-register and save your spot by sending an email to northshorechairyoga@gmail.com

Looking for an opportunity to enjoy a guided meditation while also having a bit of fun being creative? This is the workshop for you! Don’t let the suggested $40 cost limit you if you’re tight on funds, the pricing is sliding-scale or PWYC (pay what you can) I won’t turn anyone away due to lack of funds.

For the first 25 minutes we will together move through a guided breathing exercise and some gentle stretching before assembling your very own 14-18” rain wands. Rain wands will be partially constructed, you will just need to fill them with your desired filling anf decorate the outside to your liking!

Preregistration is preferred since I need to purchase more materials for the rain wands and need to know roughly how much.

As always, if you have concerns about costs but would still like to join us please reach out to me directly and we can find a solution (:

I look forward to seeing familiar faces for additional classes and maybe we can even get some new folks next month to join our community ⭐️💕🙏

Resharing the first 3 steps of Nelly the Newts Journey to emphasize the importance of preparation for any practice of movement or mindfulness.

The first slide is of an eggsack, a reminder that we all have an origin, a family history, a personal history. All the steps we take from this point to where we are today impact how we show up for our practice. For some it’s easier than others. It is important to acknowledge that although we all share diverse histories, backgrounds, and cultures, we all deserve the opportunity to access movement and mindfulness.

Slide two is a baby newt, Nelly has settled onto a pebble at the bottom of the pond and is taking a moment to rest and meditate on the journey that will come. In my chair yoga classes we always start with a small grounding practice which gives us each a chance to arrive in our seat and allow a bit of silence and stillness in preparation for the practice of movement.

The third slide, Nelly has continued to grow. While researching Newts (which live in the forest and alpine lakes across the North Shore) I learned that some have the ability to remain in this juvenile form with gills if conditions are right. Although we as humans don’t have this same luxury of retaining our youthful bodies we can contemplate a buddhist concept known as “Beginners Mind”. This concept encourages us to approach challenges and day to day practices with an open mind, as a beginner would approach it as opposed to a master, and put aside preconceptions and judgements we may have. This is especially important with a practice of yoga where there are many ideas circulating about the types of body or skills we should have to successfully practice yoga. I remind everyone who shows up to chair yoga that we are all welcome, there’s no wrong way to practice, and simply by showing up we are all doing enough. This can take the pressure off and engage with our practice of movement in a curious and playful way instead of feeling the need to move or be a certain way.

Stay tuned as Nelly progresses through their life and continues on their journey of transformation ⭐️

Nelly has continued their transformation and has left the safety of the pond. In leaving the pond the newt has also lost the gills on their head and now must breathe with lungs. 🫁

I always like to start any practice of movement or mindfulness with breathing exercises. Even if this just means taking 3 minful breaths, this can help prepare your body and mind for what comes next. A few full slow breaths will signal a change in your nervous system and help you to arrive in the present moment.

Breathing can be done in stillness or sometimes it can be fun to coordinate your breaths with some gentle movements. In these two slides Nelly has first landed in Mountain Pose, a foundational posture. In the next slide the arms are raised halfway in lifeforce pose providing a gentle warmup for shoulders and opening the side body. You might try breathing in as your arms float up then exhale as you release them back to your sides.

Putting on my Anatomy and Physiology hat this week at my chair yoga classes to share some info from when I was a paramedic on the difference between accessory muscle breathing vs effective diaphragmatic breathing.

Activation of important core muscles like the transverse abdominis is linked to the diaphragm which is why your yoga teacher tells you to keep breathing while maintaining different postures.

I hope by bringing some diagrams it can help visualize the muscles used for breathing as well as the core muscles we are trying to activate while learning how these parts all work together to provide strength, balance, and stability.
