Practice-Based Research Network: Working Together

Osteopathic research is also done in the context of networks of practitioners: The Practice-Based Research Network -PBRN design of ORION Project affords a broad focus essential to establishing a national, coordinated platform of evidence critical to informing further detailed, specific sub-studies in osteopathy.

Significantly, such coordinated platform evidence is also vital to contextualising and strengthening the impact of clinically-focused investigations, effectively helping bridge the gap between findings from clinical trials and other related designs and the realities of everyday routine care.

WOHW Day 7: Part 1
The use of PROMS: Collecting Information from Patients

How do we know that osteopathic care works? We ask the people! There are several surveys that are conducted in the osteopathic field.

Here are some of them:
The use of PROMs allows the collection of information directly from patients about the effects of osteopathic care by research organizations.

The survey allows the professionals to gather Information from the consumers on for example satisfaction, motivation for care, reasons for seeing an osteopathic practitioners etc. The results differ slightly from country to country, but there are more similarities than differences.

👍️ Throughout the surveys the satisfaction rates are very high.

To survey the different countries an OPERA study is used.
The Osteopathic Practitioners Estimates and Rates (OPERA) project is an internationally based census project dedicated to quantifying osteopathic professionals and obtaining an up-to-date scenario regarding osteopaths' geo-distribution, prevalence, incidence, and profile.

The survey has been completed in Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) and Austria.

🫱🏾‍🫲🏻 🧑🏽‍⚕️👩🏼‍⚕️ Interprofessional collaboration is an important component of providing well rounded care for a variety of conditions and symptoms, and osteopathy can play an important role in collaborative care.

📑 According to a study that surveyed physicians, a referral for osteopathy was most appropriate for musculoskeletal pain and plagiocephaly.

Collaboration between physicians and osteopathic practitioners, including mutual referrals is becoming more common, though challenges exist in optimizing interprofesisonal collaboration.

👶🏼 In the pediatric population, common functional disorders, such as torticollis, are known to pose a significant challenge to conventional medicine and frequently require an interprofessional approach.

A survey administered in a study published in 2017 demonstrated that a high percentage of physicians in Quebec believe that osteopathy has a role in addressing musculoskeletal pain as well as torticollis and plagiocephaly.

The study recommends that efforts must be made to reinforce communication skills and opportunities between physicians and osteopathic practitioners and to provide physicians with easily accessible information about osteopathy.

Our website is a great resource to share with other healthcare practitioners to help them learn about osteopathy and how it can be part of an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.

WOHW Day 6: Practicing EBP: Promoting Evidence-Based Practice

Osteopathic educators and regulators support and promote evidence-based practice encouraging the study and use of best available evidence, clinical experience, and patient preferences to make informed patient-care decisions.

Regulators expect integration of EBP to osteopathic practice and to osteopathic healthcare. Practicing EBP is a core element of being a part of an interprofessional healthcare workforce, that includes all healthcare professionals.

Osteopathic students are trained to incorporate EBP into practice.

04/19/2024

Osteopathic treatment may have positive effects not only on physical ailments but may also benefit common psychological distress that can co-exists with pain such as anxiety, fear avoidance, quality of life and general health status in populations living with persistent pain.

🫱🏻‍🫲🏽 Central to successful person-centered care is a multidisciplinary collaboration between mental health and musculoskeletal practitioners, such as osteopathic practitioners.

🤲🏼 🧠 Osteopathy combines hands-on manual approaches (using touch and manipulation) informed by osteopathic models of care with hands-off patient management approaches (using patient education, lifestyle advice, self-management solutions, and psychological support) informed by osteopathic principles, both utilizing top-down and bottom-up dynamics between peripheral tissues and the brain.

If you're looking for a whole person approach to care, you might want to book in with an osteopathic practitioner. Visit osteopathybc.ca for more information and to find a qualified osteopathic practitioner near you.

WOHW Day 4: Osteopathy for every person: for all ages and stages of life
👨‍👦👴🏼🧑🏾‍🍼👩🏼‍🦯🏃🏻‍♂️

Osteopathic health care is for every person, for all ages and stages of life. This is being reflected in research being conducted in various areas.

Osteopathy aims to improve the person’s overall wellbeing, considering the biological, sociological, psychological and spiritual needs of people as part of their local communities as well as addressing health globally.

Osteopathic professionals provide care, input and advice across a range of sectors including advisory roles in the fields of government, international health, sports, education, rehabilitation, occupational health, safety and ergonomic design- not just individual health care.

Osteopathic practitioners and osteopathic physicians generally deliver multifactorial, complex interventions as a package of care. This fits with the growing demand from international health agendas.

Research supports the benefits of applying interprofessional collaboration for improved patient outcomes.

🏃🏼‍♀️ Osteopathic manual therapy can provide many benefits, but did you know that combining exercise with osteopathy can be even more effective and provide better outcomes for disability, pain intensity, and perceived recovery?

Many osteopathic practitioners have a background in movement therapies. Some may have prior training in physiotherapy, kinesiology or as a yoga or pilates instructor or other forms of exercise.

Osteopathic practitioners working in multidisciplinary settings may have colleagues they can refer to for exercise guidance, and many practitioners work collaboratively to provide a broader spectrum of care to help you to meet your functional goals.

WOHW Day 3: Research and Evidence-Based Practices

👩‍🎓 There are more and more osteopathic professionals pursuing academic degrees and involvement in research in the last ten years.

Students are growing into research and evidence-based practice as a vital part of their education as in all healthcare studies. This prepares the students into interprofessional working and research.

In the United States osteopathic physicians are easily involved in the academic research due to the nature of their education.

Outside the U.S. there are several PhD’s specifically as on osteopath but usually osteopaths pursue professionals specifically (UCO) PhDs in various specialties such as neurology, psychology, person centered care and so on.

Osteopathy can play an important role in having an integrative approach to musculoskeletal pain management, for both acute and persistent pain.

Clinical guidelines support the use of non-pharmacological treatments, such as osteopathic manual therapy, in patients with non-specific musculoskeletal pain management and chronic pain, and for various other conditions.

The Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force Report recommends applying individualized patient-centered approach for pain management where a multidisciplinary approach is encouraged for chronic pain across various disciplines, including one or more treatment modalities, when clinically indicated to improve outcomes.

Make osteopathy part of your pain management team.

WOHW Day 2: Collaboration through research: introduction to NCOR, DO-Touch.net and LBORC

Today we would like to introduce to you several national and international organizations that produce, promote and disseminate research to underpin quality outcomes in evidence-based health care.

The National Council for Osteopathic Research (NCOR) was established in 2003 to provide leadership and unity in osteopathic research development. NCOR aims to improve the osteopathic evidence base using different means including providing strategic leadership and collaboration, engagement and education, communication, development and sustainability.

https://ncor.org.uk/about/

DO-Touch.NET is a practice-based research network, launched in 2010, whose clinician members are dedicated to assessing the clinical usefulness of osteopathic manipulative medicine. Its mission is to evaluate and advance the practice of osteopathic manipulative medicine. Through a global network of clinicians, DO-Touch.NET aims to produce research that translates easily into practice.

https://www.do-touch.net/

Louisa Burns Osteopathic Research Committee (LBORC) - LBORC is the primary committee dedicated to clinical research in the American Academy of Osteopathy. The committee strives to develop and support standards for the collection of data related to osteopathic manipulative medicine and its effect on health and disease.

Osteopathic Profession: Supporting and Embracing Science for Centuries

From the beginning the osteopathic professionals were curious to get a deeper understanding how manual therapy affects the human physiology and how that translated to peoples’ health and their perceptions of pain and discomfort. This is how the research culture became imbedded in the osteopathic community.

The Journal of Osteopathic Medicine (JOM) was founded in September 1901 and known for 119 years as The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. It is the premier scholarly, peer-reviewed publication of the osteopathic medical profession. Its mission is to serve as an international forum for disseminating scientific literature incorporating an integrative, comprehensive, patient-centered approach to clinical care and improving health.
