Lionsview Seniors' Planning Society

Lionsview Seniors' Planning Society We are a strong voice for North Shore seniors, supporting seniors' engagement in community. We can trace our roots back to the mid 1980’s.

In 2016, Lionsview Seniors’ Planning Society celebrated 25 years of service to our community. We have come a long way in the last two and a half decades, but we have remained true to our goal of being a strong voice for seniors on the North Shore. In September of 1989 a group of service providers came together to test the idea of coordinated planning for seniors’ services on the North Shore. From this initiative came the North Shore Seniors Health Initiative which produced an action plan to address specific issues in the areas of housing, transportation, preventive health, social services and community and residential care. In April 1989, the Committee hired staff to develop and test a model for planning community services with seniors themselves playing a leading role. In 1991, the Committee formed itself into a non-profit society, Lionsview Seniors’ Planning Society. The Society hired an executive director and since then we have grown and evolved. Our most recent initiatives include our Seniors Today survey of North Shore seniors (2011), an Age-friendly Acting for a Better Tomorrow project (2012) and our shaping the North Shore Communities project in 2013, each based on the eight components of the World Health organization’s Age-friendly framework. Throughout our history we have remained true to our principle of involving seniors and senior service providers in all matters that affect the quality of our lives.

Our final task: Imagine a world without ageism.

What would change if ageism didn’t exist?
What opportunities would older adults have?
These are questions to ponder - and ones we’ve been exploring this week.

Here’s what we imagine a world without ageism could look like:
✨ Intergenerational connection and shared communities
✨ Universal design that works for all ages
✨ Person-centred, inclusive care
✨ Lifelong learning and growth opportunities
✨ Equitable employment at every stage of life
✨ Positive and visible representations of aging in media

Can you imagine what a world without ageism would look like? 🌍💛

How do we challenge ageism?

1️⃣ Update policies and laws so they are fair for all ages
2️⃣ Educate people to challenge stereotypes
3️⃣ Create more chances for different generations to connect

Together, these steps make change possible in our communities and in society.

Why does ageism matter?

Ageism is not just unfair. It can harm health, shorten lives, and increase loneliness and poverty. It can also lead to discrimination in health care, work, and community life.

Ending ageism is about protecting dignity, health, and rights for all people.

Where does ageism show up? 👀

🏛️ Institutional: When laws, policies, or systems treat people differently based on age.
➡️ Example: Mandatory retirement policies that limit older adults’ participation in the workforce.

💬 Interpersonal: In everyday interactions that reinforce stereotypes or exclude people.
➡️ Example: Assuming an older person can’t navigate online services or digital forms.

🪞 Self-directed: When we internalize negative messages about aging.
➡️ Example: Believing “I’m too old to volunteer or learn new skills.”

Ageism is everywhere - once we understand it better, we can challenge it.

What is Ageism?

Ageism means judging or treating people unfairly because of their age. It includes:

🧠 Stereotypes – how we think about people
💙 Prejudice – how we feel about people
⚖️ Discrimination – how we act toward people

Ageism can affect anyone, at any age. Naming it is the first step to stopping it.

📢 Welcome to Ageism Awareness Week 2025!

Ageism is one of the most common forms of discrimination. It affects health, shortens lives, and increases inequality.

This week, we are joining the Canadian Coalition Against Ageism to:
✔️ Recognize the contributions of older people
✔️ Share information and raise awareness
✔️ Build stronger connections across generations
✔️ Support change in our communities

💡 Over the next week, we’ll post resources, facts, and actions you can take to help challenge ageism. Follow along and be part of the change.

Today is a special day! October 1st is National Seniors Day in Canada and the International Day of Older Persons 💛

This year’s UN theme “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights” reminds us that older adults are leaders, changemakers, and everyday heroes.

Here on the North Shore, we see this through our amazing Seniors Action Table members. Each month, they share their experiences, speak up about real challenges, and work together to make our community more welcoming and accessible for seniors and folks with disabilities.

👏 A big thank you to them and to all the older adults who continue to inspire, lead, and make a difference every day. Happy Seniors Day!

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), we reflect on what it means to live and work on the unceded, ancestral, and stolen territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations. This day calls on all of us to unlearn colonial teachings, listen, learn, and reflect. 🧡

A good place to start is by engaging with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation to explore resources, read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, and access educational materials: https://trw-svr.nctr.ca/

The North Vancouver City Library, North Vancouver District Library, and West Vancouver District Library also offer books and resources to deepen understanding.

📍 On the North Shore, you can join:
📽️ Movie Matinee: SUGARCANE — West Vancouver Memorial Library, 2–4 PM
https://westvanlibrary.ca/event/movie-matinee-sugarcane/

🪶 A Day of Culture and Reflection — MONOVA, 11 AM–4:30 PM, Pay what you can

💙 Another meaningful step is to support Survivors directly. Consider donating to the Indian Residential School Survivor Society, which provides essential services to Residential School Survivors and families experiencing intergenerational trauma: https://www.irsss.ca/

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey. The impacts of residential schools and other colonial harms continue to affect Indigenous peoples today, and together we must continue to walk the path of learning and reflection.
