Is your cat or dog vomiting more than once every few weeks?

While occasional vomiting can happen, repeated or chronic episodes may signal an underlying condition.

Some possible causes include:

🔹Food intolerances or allergies

🔹Inflammatory bowel disease

🔹Kidney or liver disease

🔹Parasites

🔹Endocrine disorders

Our Internal Medicine team is equipped to investigate complex cases and offer targeted, long-term care solutions. Speak with your family vet for a referral to our internal medicine department.

✨TAILS OF TRIUMPH ✨

The adorable British Shorthair kitten, Jynx, has a big appetite, but an even bigger appetite for mischief! This time, the sweet boy found his way into a common human medication, Fluoxetine. While this medication can be used for pets with high anxiety, the dosing is much different for pets than it is for people! Jynx’s family is no stranger to his antics, though, as he is a known scavenger and loves trying to get into things and eat what he shouldn’t.

The medical team at Mountainside Animal Emergency and Speciality were quick to induce vomiting, the best way to get any unabsorbed medication out of his little stomach! Jynx threw up, but since it had been close to an hour since the ingestion, there was a strong chance some of the medication would have been absorbed.

Jynx was admitted overnight for monitoring of toxicity related to the ingestion. He received activated charcoal and IV fluids to help his body process any of the medication that was absorbed. After a full night of IV fluids and cuddles, Jynx was sent home in the morning fully stable and free from any toxicity symptoms!

A few days after going home, his appetite had decreased a little, and he had experienced some vomiting and lethargy. Jynx was sent home with some appetite stimulant, probiotic paste, and a bland diet.

Since being home, Jynx has made a full recovery and is back to his kitten shenanigans! He is always on the hunt for things to get into and nibble on. Most recently, he made a break for the potato chips! We are so glad that he is feeling better and more like his adorable kitten self.

When pets present with chronic vomiting, swallowing issues, or unexplained digestive symptoms, our internal medicine team may recommend an endoscopy.

Endoscopy allows us to:

🔹Examine the GI tract without major surgery
🔹Retrieve foreign objects
🔹Collect biopsies for diagnosis
🔹Minimize recovery time

It’s a powerful tool that helps us get answers quickly and comfortably. Ask your family vet about whether endoscopy might be appropriate—or call our team directly to learn more.

✨TAILS OF TRIUMPH ✨

A week after moving into their new home, Bandit’s family noticed something was off. He had begun going in and out of the litterbox, but not actually peeing. This wasn’t the first time he had experienced a urinary issue, and his family knew this needed to be addressed as soon as possible! He had seen his primary care vet the day before, and since his bladder was still small, he was sent home with a mild calming/pain medication. With the medication, he seemed a bit more comfortable, but was still not expressing any urine.

The next day, he was brought to Mountainside Animal Emergency and Specialty where our team decided to sedate Bandit and attempt to manually express his bladder. When this method did not work, Bandit was hospitalised to have a catheter placed. This seemed to do the trick, and with some extra TLC, Bandit was able to start passing urine!

He was monitored closely overnight to ensure he did not develop another obstruction. After consistently being able to pass urine with the help of the catheter, Bandit went home for monitoring.

He has been doing much better since, and has now adjusted to his new home! While it was a joy caring for this sweet boy, we hope he does not have any more urinary episodes and remains the happy and healthy boy he is today!
