It’s been a pleasure having Dr. Cohen on the show. It’s amazing to be learning from his experience as an addition and substance use disorder psychiatrist dealing with such a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon. Addiction and substance use disorders are a growing and complicated human behaviour, which affect many people in our communities and around us.
It’s important to learn about them, study them, and have the right tools to deal with these conditions. In this episode, Dr. Cohen discusses the science and latest research behind addiction. We discuss topics such as the genetic predisposition to addiction, the pathophysiology of addiction on the body and the brain, the psycho-social behaviour associated with addiction and its link to depression and anxiety, the relationship between using substances and the reward mechanism in the brain especially those associated with the dopamine pathway, and the strategies to better understand and deal with addiction. In addition, Dr. Cohen sheds light on the dangers involved with the usage of certain drugs such as co***ne, ni****ne, cannabis, va**ng, and alcohol. Lastly, he discusses therapy options that are available to help with substance use disorders that include medication, psychotherapy, behavioural and social changes, community support, and better education.
This is my passion project. ❤️
