Just being grateful for where I am in my life and my career. I couldn’t have done this without the help and support of my parents, friends, family, and colleagues. I feel loved and lucky. Moreover, I’ve learnt that without mentorship and giveback from the previous generation of doctors and therapists, I would not have been where I am. I’ve stood on the shoulders of giants and they’ve helped me go further and beyond. I won’t forget when I come from. I’m grateful. Now it’s my turn.

Dr. Jack Taunton. I will miss you. RIP ❤️🖤🖤

It’s a sad today. We’ve lost a legend. A true legend.

With heavy hearts and deepest feelings, I’m sending my condolences for the loss of one of the most amazing human beings. He was a true human being, an amazing mentor and a caring doctor, a loving husband and father. Everyone around him loved him because of his compassion, energy, enthusiasm to make everyone feel better, ability to improve his community and provide mentorship, provide care for his patients, and always moving forward and being positive. The impact that he’s left amongst his family, friends, patients, peers, colleagues, and in his community is unparalleled.

I have had the privileged of knowing him, learning from him, working for him as a student, working with him as a colleague, and ultimately having him in my clinic and on my podcast show as a friend and mentor. It has been a true honour and privilege having known Dr. Jack Taunton. 🖤

“Beyond the Scrubs” - Episode 8

ADDICTION & The Psychology of the Brain

✅ Guest: Dr. Greg Cohen - (MD)

>> Psychiatrist
>> Specializing in addictions & substance use disorders

- McGill University - Bachelor degree
- St. George’s University - Medical degree
- University of Toronto - Specialization in psychiatry
- Boston University Medical Centre - Fellowship in addiction psychiatry

It’s been a pleasure having Dr. Cohen on the show. It’s amazing to be learning from his experience as an addition and substance use disorder psychiatrist dealing with such a complex and multi-faceted phenomenon. Addiction and substance use disorders are a growing and complicated human behaviour, which affect many people in our communities and around us.
It’s important to learn about them, study them, and have the right tools to deal with these conditions. In this episode, Dr. Cohen discusses the science and latest research behind addiction. We discuss topics such as the genetic predisposition to addiction, the pathophysiology of addiction on the body and the brain, the psycho-social behaviour associated with addiction and its link to depression and anxiety, the relationship between using substances and the reward mechanism in the brain especially those associated with the dopamine pathway, and the strategies to better understand and deal with addiction. In addition, Dr. Cohen sheds light on the dangers involved with the usage of certain drugs such as co***ne, ni****ne, cannabis, va**ng, and alcohol. Lastly, he discusses therapy options that are available to help with substance use disorders that include medication, psychotherapy, behavioural and social changes, community support, and better education.

This is my passion project. ❤️

2018 - World Cup - Russia

What are the odds of sitting next to Ronaldo R9, the legend, on the plane? The stars lined up for us.

We got lucky being upgraded to first class because of a glitch at the airport as their system was down exactly at the moment it was our turn to check in. We were held up for 1.5 hours and finally got the clearance exactly 15min before boarding was being closed. We had to run to the next terminal and just got in 1-2 minutes before they closed the doors. We were all sweaty. We were so panicked and rushed that we didn’t even check our tickets to know our seats. Once we got on the plane, we noticed that they had upgraded us to rows 2 and 3 in first class. They had made up for their mistakes. 15 minutes after boarding, the plane was waiting for one last person to board. We noticed 3 people (entourage) bringing with them a few bags and placing them in the first-class over bins. However, none of them sat in that section. Finally, a gentleman arrived. He sat down immediately. I didn’t even notice him. 30 seconds in, my friend kept nudging me. He told me to “look up, look up” with an increased sense of astonishment. I looked up. There he was. The legend. Ronaldo R9 of Brazil. I had never known what it meant to be starstruck. Well, I felt it for the very first time in my life. My heart was pounding, mouth open wide in disbelief, palms sweaty, and unable to speak. Finally, after a few minutes, I got a control of my nerves. My 4 other friends and I were plotting a plan to ask him to take a picture with us. But we were nervous as hell. Unfortunately, 5min into the flight, he fell asleep. We had no idea of how we could wake him up. We came up with a brilliant (or dumb) idea of going to the bathroom and “accidentally” nudging his shoulder to wake him up. Time was against us as our total flight was only 1.5 hours. We were on our way to watch Brazil play. Before we could put our brilliant plan into action, Ronaldo woke up. He asked for some tea. The gods were on side. This was our moment. We got the nerves to ask him for a photo. He’s was super friendly and agreed. ❤️

Another exciting year ahead. Cheers to all the May birthdays 😎😎❤️
