What if walking down the stairs gave you more benefits than walking up? 🧠💪
Not all exercise is created equal—and when it comes to muscle repair, metabolism, and strength gains, eccentric movements might just be the secret sauce.
From bicep curls to stair walking, learn why the “lowering” phase of your workout could be doing more heavy lifting than you think.👇
All forms of exercise cause microscopic muscle damage. This damage stimulates the release of hormones. Hormones trigger muscle repair, rebuilding them stronger than before.There are different types of muscle contraction and this will discuss concentric versus eccentric exercise.
* Concentric exercises (e.g., bicep curls, squats):
* Recruit and fatigue many different muscle fibres.
* Eccentric exercises (e.g., lowering a weight, descending into a squat):
* Recruit fewer muscle fibres.
* Involve a load up to four times higher than concentric movements.
* Cause greater microscopic damage to cells and fibres.
* Greater damage results in:
* Higher calorie burn during repair and recovery.
* Raised metabolic rate.
* More effective strength gains compared to conventional exercise.
In a study, volunteers were randomly assigned to:
* Walk up stairs and take the lift down (more concentric), or
* Walk down stairs and take the lift up (more eccentric).
This was done twice a week in a 10-storey building.
Both groups saw health improvements, but the downstairs walkers had greater benefits:
* Greater improvement in resting heart rate (a key fitness indicator).
* Better insulin sensitivity.
* Improved blood fat levels.
Additional benefits for the downstairs walkers:
* Greater improvement in muscle function.
* Increased bone density.
* Muscle strength improved by 34% (vs. 17% in the uphill group) – double the gain.
They also performed better on a balance test, indicating:
* Reduced risk of falls and injury.
In another study comparing older adults doing traditional exercise vs. eccentric exercise, the eccentric group saw a 38% improvement in leg strength, compared to just an 8% improvement in the traditional group.
Done right, not only will eccentric exercises keep you in good shape, they will also help your body to burn calories after you have finished – more so than a seemingly ‘tougher’ workout. This could be the metabolic secret that has been hiding in your workout all along! We are here to help with that. Book an appointment at Body Works Sports Physiotherapy and follow us for more tips!
