11 Years ago almost to the day, I started working at Acumamas. I have loved it and am so grateful for all the amazing clients and my time here. I have learned soo so much. Thanks to all the OB's Midwives and Doula's for trusting me with your referrals over the years. Now, on the eve of the New Moon in Aquarius, which is all about vision, hope and progress, I am closing this chapter to start a new one that I have dreamed about since I was in school so many years ago which is an acupuncture clinic on the North Shore. Thanks Kim for teaming up with me. Here we go!

I was so hippie (how hippie were you, Aviva?) that I started sewing my own homemade cotton pads in my teens - back in 1981 - and used those for years before organic commercial pads and tampons hit the shelves. My husband - well, he was so crunchy that he’d rinse ‘my pads bucket’ out for me! (Awww…). Eventually I used a combo of my own and purchased organic pads/tampons - so when I had to be out and about (hospital shifts, overnight births), I had the convenience of disposable options.

Now there are so many wonderful options to choose from - from beautiful flannel pads to period panties to diva cups to organic disposable pads and tampons. All have pros and cons depending on your preferences, needs, and flow. But no matter what - going organic for period products is really important to your health - and for the health of our planet. Here’s why...

Tampons and pads, fall under the FDA category “medical devices” which are subject to a lower standard of scrutiny than even cosmetics and aren’t monitored for ingredient safety. But they are going into our vaginas, which are full of blood vessels and lymph glands, that allow for the direct absorption of chemicals into your circulatory system.

And get this: companies aren’t required to disclose ingredients in menstrual products - they can have just about anything in them - and they do. One study found that tampons and pads may have any of these *unlisted* ingredients:
🌙 Dioxins from the bleaching process
🌙 Furans
🌙 Pesticide Residues
🌙 Unknown Fragrance Chemicals
🌙 Adhesive Chemicals, such as Methyldibromo Glutaronitrile

Exposure to any or all of these endocrine-disrupting, allergenic, and/or carcinogenic ingredients over a women’s reproductive lifetime (think 400 periods in our lifetime x 5 days per period) may contribute to:
🌙 Heavy Periods
🌙 Allergic reactions
🌙 Endometriosis
🌙 Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
🌙 Cancer
And more.

So, menstruating peeps - it’s really important to go green when you’re seeing red (okay, I just had to let that fly!). Want to learn more about healthier period products? Head over to my article at the link below - and please share your fave products in the comments.
