An atmospheric river won’t stop us from having fun! We had such a great session today working on fine motor skills including some knife and whittling skills. The kids all came dressed for the rain and were delighted to jump and play in big puddles along the trail today.

What a stunning fall day in the forest! Our groups loved noticing all of the fall colours and the beauty of the filtered sunlight.

Today we introduced the Activation Meter with our playful dinosaur friends - a self regulation tool to help children and families communicate activation levels. All ranges on the activation meter are appropriate, but sometimes we need to change our activation levels to match certain situations. We’ll be exploring tools in upcoming weeks for how we can change activation levels up or down as needed.

“My body feels like a rainbow when I am happy!”

We love using playful books to help develop emotional literacy. The Color Monster sparked discussion today about how we feel in our bodies when we feel excited, frustrated, happy, angry, calm, sad, confused, among others. Then some children chose one of those emotions and drew how they feel in their bodies when they experience that, as another way to foster greater awareness of their emotion state, another foundation of self regulation.

Collaborative pumpkin painting was our gathering invitation today and these kids sure embraced it! We love when kids lead the play and soon the paintbrushes were put aside for full on hand painting, and dumping bottles of paint all over the pumpkins. So much fun sensory play!

Teaching body sensing through playful games! Kids learn best through play so we try to engage them in fun activities and the giggles today were endless.

Today we introduced body sensing and body scans, a foundational skill of self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to manage our bodies, emotions, attention, and behaviour to meet our needs and the demands of the situation. Learning more about different feelings and sensations in our bodies, or interoception, helps us answer the question, “How do I feel?” in any given moment. These interoceptive body sensations drive our motivation to self regulate.

Such a beautiful sunny start to our fall session today! It was so nice to meet the new families and see familiar faces. Today was all about rapport and relationship building to help the kids become more comfortable with all of us, the other children, and the areas we will be exploring in future sessions.

Meet Corinna! Corinna is an occupational therapy rehabilitation assistant who is co-facilitating one of our groups this fall. We are thrilled to have Corinna join Forest Kids OT!

Corinna (she/her) is a rehabilitation assistant with experience working with neurodiverse children. She completed the Rehabilitation Assistant Diploma program at Capilano University and has a background working in rehabilitation, nutrition, and adventure tourism. Corinna has worked one-on-one with neurodivergent students and preschool classes with Fresh Air Learning.

A strong believer in play-based learning, Corinna understands how to adapt her approach to unlock the curiosity and confidence of each child. She is an energetic mother of three who can be found on the sports fields of Lynn Valley or hiking the vast trails of the North Shore with her St Bernese puppy, Winnie.

Meet Jillian! Jillian is an OT who is co-facilitating one of our groups this fall. We are so happy to have her join Forest Kids OT!

Jillian (she/her) has been an occupational therapist for 13 years with a focus on mental health. She sees how spending time in nature can support wellness, contribute to a sense of connection to our environment and as a life long tool to ground ourselves. She loves spending time outside with her two young kids swimming, biking and playing in the forest. She is a volunteer Girl Guide Leader and a certified yoga instructor.

This week we’ve started doing assessments for each family to learn how to best support each child in the group. We then collaborate with the families to create a unique goal for each child to work on during the sessions, which then guide the planning of our groups.

Children might be digging in the mud, balancing on a log, playing a game with peers, or doing an act activity - to them, it all feels like a fun adventure but they are working toward therapy goals!
