(26)

Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry dealing with infants, children, adolescence and special need patients. Pediatric dentists typically require an extra two to three years of post-doctoral training after attaining their dental degree. Pediatric dentistry emphasizes the establishment of trust and confidence in children with their dentists. Consequently, one of the main components of pedi

atric training is child psychology. This manifests itself in special office designs, different communication styles and an emphasis on teaching preventative dental habits to children in an effort to make dental visits enjoyable. WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A PEDIATRIC DENTIST? It is recommended by the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that the first dental visit should occur approximately six months after your child's first tooth erupts and no later than age one. GENERAL DENTIST VS. PEDIATRIC DENTIST: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Pediatric dentists can offer the specialized focus on your child that general dentists may not be prepared or inclined to offer. Unlike a general dentist, a pediatric dentist has two to three years of additional training. This program of study and hands-on experience emphasizes child psychology, growth and development. Pediatric dentists know how to examine and treat children - not always the most cooperative of subjects - in ways that make them comfortable and safe. The pediatric dental office is child-centric. It is specially designed, arranged, decorated with children in mind. WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE FIRST DENTAL VISIT? After a dental examination, the pediatric dentist may present information on:
-Your child's cavity risk assessment
-Information about early childhood cavities
-Information on preventative home care techniques: including information on brushing, diet counseling and fluoride use
-Information about preventing mouth and teeth injuries
-Information on growth and development

Pediatric Dentists promote the dental health of children as well as serve as an educational resource for parents. BIOGRAPHY

Besides brushing, you should also floss once a day. Flossing removes food and plaque from between your teeth — places your toothbrush cannot reach. This is also a great way to help prevent gum disease.

You should also make regular visits to your dentist and eat right. Candy and other sticky, sugary foods are bad for your teeth. Eating a good healthy diet, brushing and flossing often, and visiting your dentist regularly are the best way to keep a healthy smile!

This chart tells you when baby teeth come in (or erupt) in most children.
Chart of Primary Teeth
If your child is getting his or her teeth and seems to be in pain, you can:
~ rub the gums with a clean finger, or
~ rub the gums with the back of a small, cool spoon.
~ If your child is still unhappy, your dentist, pharmacist or doctor can suggest an over-the-counter medicine to ease the pain.

Here's what you should not do:
~ Do not use the kind of painkiller that can be rubbed on your child's gums. Your child may swallow it.
~ Do not give your child teething biscuits. They may have sugar added or contain hidden sugars.
~ Do not ignore a fever. Getting new teeth does not make babies sick or give them a fever. If your child has a fever, check with your doctor.

At age six or seven, the first adult (or permanent) teeth come in. They are known as the "first molars," or the "six-year molars."

They come in at the back of the mouth, behind the last baby (or primary) teeth. They do not replace any primary teeth.

Also at around age six, children start to lose their primary teeth. The roots slowly get weak, and the tooth falls out. Children lose primary teeth until they are about 12 years old.

It's okay for children to wiggle their primary teeth if they are loose. But it's not okay to use force to pull out a tooth that's not ready to come out. When a tooth comes out at the right time, there will be very little bleeding.

Did you know that primary, or “baby,” teeth are important for many reasons? Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to erupt.
