“I no longer fear dying, which is an enormous gift because I am now able to fully enjoy life however much time I have left. It did more than end the end-of-life anxiety. It has been liberating and helped resolve childhood trauma. It’s been phenomenal.”

Janis Hughes lives with stage 4 cancer and was denied legal access to psilocybin therapy. Like thousands of patients, she took her health into her own hands because regulated support was blocked. No one facing end-of-life distress should be put in that position.

This trailer is from our short film that follows Janis’s story and the movement fighting for safe, legal access to psychedelic-assisted therapy in Canada. Watch it on YouTube or through the link in our bio, then share it so more Canadians understand what patients are up against.

Curious what legal psilocybin really looks like in practice?

On December 9 at 4PM PT (7PM ET), TheraPsil is hosting an online session with Oregon facilitator and TheraPsil member Jay Cusker (LMFT), who has supported hundreds of psilocybin journeys, to share what is working, what still needs work, and what Canada can learn.

This is the final community webinar of the year, and one that you won't want to miss!

Online via Zoom. Tickets available by donation below.

In clinical research, “unmasking” (or unblinding) happens when participants become aware of whether they received the treatment or placebo. Because psychedelics have such strong, subjective psychoactive effects, most people can tell. This can create expectancy effects and introduce bias.

In psychedelic research, this raises deeper questions:

What if the subjective experience is part of the therapy? Can we, and should we, separate pharmacology from context, culture, and consciousness?

Clinical trials remain essential for safety, efficacy, and drug approval. But psychedelics also show us the limits of relying solely on Western biomedical methods. Moving forward, research needs to incorporate multiple ways of knowing, including genuine partnership with Traditional Knowledge Keepers who hold vital expertise that clinical trials do not capture.

This post shares peer-reviewed research for education and advocacy only. It does not represent medical advice or Health Canada–approved treatments.

Huge thanks to our volunteer researcher Sarah for breaking this down.

More to come.

We honour the courage and sacrifice of Canada’s veterans.

For many, the battle doesn’t end when they come home. PTSD, depression, and moral injury continue to take a serious toll on veterans and their families.

Nearly two years after “The Time Is Now” report, Canada has been told what needs to change. Veterans are still waiting. Access to effective mental health care, including psychedelic-assisted therapy, is still out of reach.

This week, we’re holding space to listen directly to a Canadian Special Operations Forces veteran about healing the unseen wounds of service.

We remember, and we also have a responsibility to do better.

Lest we forget.

Last week, sixteen clinicians gathered in Abbotsford for a five-day experiential retreat. We learned in community and practiced the steadiness this work asks for.

For the first time, we welcomed colleagues trained through MAPS, CIIS, IPI, and other programs to join our training community. It felt right to learn together.

Thank you to our facilitators, Dr. Ingrid Pacey and Maria Paula Almiron. Our next retreat is planned for February 26-March 2, 2026.

Reimagining Psychedelic Research is a free three-part webinar series on how patient- and practitioner-funded models can move psychedelic science from profit to participation.

We will map the current landscape, introduce the stakeholder-funded model, and share PsilWell as a real-world case study.

Register once for all three Wednesday sessions at therapsil.ca/events or head to the link in our bio.

Recordings will be sent to those who RSVP but cannot attend.

Recent research led by Yvan Beaussant et al., published in General Hospital Psychiatry (2025), highlights that outcomes in psilocybin-assisted therapy depend on far more than the medicine.

Preparation, professional support, and the therapeutic environment influence whether patients can engage, make meaning, and benefit.

This study reinforces what clinicians and researchers have long observed: set and setting matter, and trained, supportive care plays a central role in creating safety and trust.

A first-of-its-kind clinical study is underway in Victoria, BC.

PsilWell, a Health Canada–authorized and community-funded study, is exploring how psilocybin-assisted therapy can support everyday wellness in adults.
