Do you ever feel tired after listening to someone speak for a long period of time? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿฅฑ Using your ears (and your brain) to hear is similar to working out a muscle... It makes you tired! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿง  Listening fatigue is normally experienced after listening to sounds for an extended period of time. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ•ฆ When someone has a hearing loss, listening fatigue can arise sooner, since the extra challenge of the hearing loss often causes more struggling and mental power to โ€œfill in the auditory gapsโ€.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
So, what should you do to help with listening fatigue? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ If you have a hearing loss, wearing appropriately fit hearing aids can help you hear the sounds that your missing/ strain to hear, reducing the mental load on your brain.๐Ÿฆป๐Ÿ‘
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Also, taking a break from a noisy environment can help reduce the effects of listening fatigue! Go for a nature walk ๐Ÿšถ, meditate in a quiet area for a few minutes (โ€œBox Breathingโ€ meditation is what I recommend) ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ, or read a book/ article of interest ๐Ÿ“š.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Reducing background noise (turn of the TV/ radio, close your door) can also help reduce listening fatigue ๐Ÿ”‡.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
And finally, taking a 20 minute nap to give your brain and ears a rest is an excellent solution to decreasing listening fatigue ๐Ÿ˜ด.

A hearing aid is a life changing device that can significantly improve the way someone interacts with the world and the people around them. It is important to strengthen a few key skills to make your investment in better hearing work for the long run. What makes someone with hearing aids a successful user? Here are a few of our top picks! ๐Ÿ’ฏ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
โœ… Feeling confident in getting the hearing aid in (and out) of your ear: I often tell my patientโ€™s that this skill is the most important skill to practice and learn. Properly inserted hearing aids will provide the most appropriate sound levels into the ear, and will ensure the hearing aid stays snug in the ear. Practice makes perfect with this skill. Using a mirror can help ensure your hearing aid is in your ear properly. ๐Ÿ˜Š
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
โœ… Proper Fitting and follow up care: Getting hearing aids is not a onetime event such as buying a kitchen appliance or choosing a new toilet paper. Regular hearing aid follow-up appointments are essential for a successful hearing aid user. These appointments can consist of hearing aid adjustments, maintenance, learning new skills, and hearing aid cleaning. Being fit with hearing aids should be seen as a gradual and rewarding process, where the hearing aids are tweaked and adjusted over time, depending on how your brain adapts to the new sound it is hearing. ๐Ÿ‘‚
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
โœ… Consistent Use: Wearing your hearing aid consistently is important for your brain to adjust to the new sounds you are hearing. Consistency of use can continue to keep your ears โ€œworkingโ€, which can in turn help prevent your hearing from deteriorating further. ๐Ÿ•
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
โœ… Communication Strategies: Hearing Aids can improve your ability to hear, but they will not restore your hearing to normal. Itโ€™s important to learn communication strategies that can help you better understand speech, such as learning effective listening strategies, practicing speech reading skills, and asking people to speak more clearly. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘‚ Choosing a hearing aid? What factors should be considered? ๐Ÿค”
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Hearing aids are a vital tool for those with hearing loss, helping to amplify sounds and improve overall hearing ability. โœ… When choosing a hearing aid, there are several important features to consider to ensure that the device is the best fit for your needs. ๐Ÿ“‹
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธYour Audiologist: It is important to consult with a professional and highly-regarded audiologist who can help you understand your hearing loss, evaluate your needs, and recommend the best hearing aid for you.ย  It is a good idea to find an audiologist that is brand-neutral and independently owned, and that regularly uses best-practice methods such as real-ear measurements and speech in noise testing.ย  It also may be helpful to see the same audiologist for each of your hearing healthcare follow up appointments.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ‘‚Type of hearing loss: Different types of hearing loss require different types of hearing aids. It is important to consider the level of amplification needed and to choose a device that can provide the necessary level.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐ŸŽงNoise Reduction Technology: Some hearing aid types come with multiple microphones which can help determine where sound is coming from and focus on sounds coming from a specific direction, like a person speaking to you.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ“ฒConnectivity: Many hearing aids now come with Bluetooth connectivity which allows you to connect your hearing aid to your phone or other devices.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ”‹Battery and Battery Life: Some hearing aids are rechargeable, and some use disposable batteries. Consider how long the battery life is for the device.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ’ฐPrice: Hearing aids can be expensive, so it is important to consider the cost of the device when making your decision. Keep in mind that the most expensive hearing aids are not be the best option for everyone.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Ultimately, the most important feature of a hearing aid is that it improves your ability to hear and makes your life easier. ๐Ÿ‘‚

Hearing loss and diabetes are two health conditions that, while seemingly unrelated, have been found to be connected in several studies. People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing hearing loss than those without the disease.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
One of the main reasons for this connection is that diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the ear, which can lead to hearing loss. High blood sugar levels can damage the small blood vessels in the inner ear, leading to a loss of blood flow to the hair cells that are responsible for converting sound waves into electrical signals. This can cause permanent damage to the hair cells and lead to hearing loss.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Another reason for the connection between diabetes and hearing loss is that diabetes can cause nerve damage, which can affect the nerves in the ear that are responsible for transmitting sound signals to the brain. This can result in hearing loss, as well as tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Additionally, people with diabetes are more likely to have high blood pressure, which can also contribute to hearing loss. High blood pressure can damage the small blood vessels in the ear, leading to decreased blood flow and hearing loss.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
To prevent hearing loss associated with diabetes, it is essential to manage blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Regular checkups with a healthcare professional, as well as regular screenings for hearing loss, can also help identify and address any hearing issues early on.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
It's important to note that there are other factors that can contribute to hearing loss, such as age, exposure to loud noises, and certain medications. However, the link between diabetes and hearing loss highlights the importance of managing diabetes and its associated risk factors to prevent hearing loss.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
In conclusion, diabetes and hearing loss are connected in multiple ways, mostly due to the blood vessels and nerves damage that diabetes can cause. It is important for people with diabetes to take steps to manage their condition and to monitor for signs of hearing loss, in order to prevent permanent damage.

Push the button when you hear the beep! โœ… People often wonder, โ€˜how often should I get my hearing checked?โ€™ ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Associationโ€™s (ASHA) guidelines suggest that healthy adults ages 18-40 years old, who are not experiencing any noticeable signs of hearing loss, should have their hearing checked every three to five years. ๐Ÿ“…
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Itโ€™s also recommended that individuals over the age of 60 should have their hearing checked every year, regardless of whether or not they are experiencing symptoms. ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿ‘โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

Individuals who are regularly exposed to loud noises (like construction and manufacturing workers) should get their hearing checked yearly. ๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ’ฅโ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

For people diagnosed with a hearing loss, itโ€™s important to get your ears checked at least once a year, so your hearing aids can be fine tuned to any changes in your hearing! ๐Ÿ‘‚

Did you know that 48 million Americans (and nearly 477 million people worldwide) have hearing loss? ๐Ÿ‘‚
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
For many, appropriately fit hearing aids are a great way to treat hearing loss, and the benefits go far beyond better hearing. ๐Ÿ‘‚
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Studies show that the use of hearing aids can decrease the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. By using hearing aids, people stay engaged in conversations, engaged in family and friend relationships, and, most importantly, engaged in life. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ๐Ÿ‘‚
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Hearing aids have also been shown to help with balance! ๐Ÿ“Š Research from Washington University at St. Louis found that patients with hearing aids in both ears performed better on balance tests when they wore their hearing aids. The research suggests that sound information can contribute to maintaining one's stability and balance. ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿ”Š
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Patients may be using important sound cues as 'auditory reference points' (or landmarks) to help maintain their balance. Other research suggest that hearing loss is a heavy strain on our brain's cognitive resources, in turn putting less effort and cognitive power into maintaining balance. ๐Ÿง
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
By using hearing aids, individuals can help locate sounds better, and precious cognitive resources can be allocated to where they belong! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ‘‚

What is a CROS hearing aid? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Imagine sitting at a table with one of your friends to the left of you, and your other friend to the right of you. Now imagine that your left ear doesnโ€™t pick up any sound. ๐Ÿ‘‚ It would be really tricky hearing your friend that is sitting to the left of you.๐Ÿ‘‚
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Thereโ€™s a solution for people that have this kind of hearing difficulty! ๐Ÿ‘
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
A CROS hearing aid is a very special kind of hearing aid used when someone has very, very low hearing in one ear, but normal hearing in their other ear. A special CROS hearing aid is worn on the ear with low hearing, and a normal hearing aid is worn on the ear with normal hearing. Sound from the low hearing side gets transferred (or CROSsed) over to the other normal hearing ear! Patientโ€™s with a CROS hearing aid can now have increased access to sound from all directions.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
For a CROS hearing aid to be prescribe, the hearing ability of one ear must be so low that a normal hearing aid wonโ€™t work properly for it. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘‚

So, you upgraded to a new pair of hearing aids, Congrats! ๐Ÿ’ฏ A new question on your mind might be: โ€œWhat should I do with my old set of hearing aids?โ€๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Here are some suggestions:
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ’พ Back Up ๐Ÿ’พ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
For at least the first 3 months, it is a good idea to keep your old set of hearing aids available as a back up, in case if you run into any troubles with your new hearing aids. Unexpected things can happen, especially if you are switching hearing aid styles or brands! ๐Ÿ‘
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿฅฐ Donate Them ๐Ÿฅฐ
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
There are many people who have hearing loss that can greatly benefit from a donated hearing aid. Several volunteer organizations are available to help recycle old hearing aids and get them fit to people in need. This includes the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Canadian International Hearing Services (CIHS), Saint John Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Inc., the Starkey Foundation, and even local Rotary Clubs. ๐Ÿ’ž
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿค— Help a Loved One ๐Ÿค—
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
If you have a family member or friend who would benefit from a hearing aid, you can donate the hearing aid to them. Just make sure to go to a hearing health care professional to get the hearing aid refit to their hearing ability! An improperly fit hearing aid can cause additional hearing issues, so make sure a professional adjusts and services them first. Usually hearing professionals will charge a small fee for this reprogramming. ๐Ÿ‘
