Some women may be pregnant at the time of their IME and therefore the decision to proceed with their chest X-ray (CXR) may cause some concerns. If this applies to you here are some things to consider in order to make an informed decision that is right for you!
You do have the option to complete the other components of your IME and postpone your CXR until after you deliver and IRCC will be notified without penalization. However, it is important to note that your medical will be put on hold and cannot be submitted until the CXR is complete. As a result, your application will be delayed.
So what are the concerns with X-rays and pregnancy?
X-rays contain ionizing radiation which can be harmful to developing babies in high doses, especially at the beginning of pregnancy. It is important to note that during your IME you will be undergoing a CHEST X RAY, therefore your baby is very minimally exposed. Furthermore, your radiology technologist will provide you with a lead apron to cover your abdomen which will further protect your baby.
Some radiation facts:
It is estimated that during the course of a pregnancy a developing baby will be exposed to ~ 1mGy of background radiation from day to day life. The dose of radiation associated with a CXR is ~0.0005-0.01 mGy. To put that into perspective, a plane trip will have a dose exposure of ~0.035 mGy.
Bottom line is, overall the risk is very minimal!
Your Panel Physician will also review this with you at your appointment and answer any questions you may have!
FYI: CXRs are safe while breastfeeding!
