What a privilege we had to attend the SOGT Marlow Lecture where we had the opportunity to hear from our very own Dr Modupe Tunde-Byass. She spoke about “Good policy is good medicine: The role of Physicians in Advocacy”.

Dr. Tunde-Byass enlightened us on lessons learned during her career as a physician advocate. The focus of her talk “This is my story” explored the role of physicians in advocacy, from residency to leadership, and in advancing reproductive justice and equality.

We are so proud of the NYGH Empress for her years of perseverance and dedication. She is a true advocate and has risen as a leader in our community and a voice for many who have needed it.

Congratulations to Krista Fairles who was appointed Deputy Head Midwife. She will be supporting the midwifery team and Aynsley Donohue. We are so happy to have Krista on board in this leadership role. Mostly because she’s the most entertaining human but also because of her strength, collaborative nature and intelligence.

Krista’s bio is below ✨

Krista completed the Midwifery Education Program at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and joined Midwifery Care North Don River Valley and NYGH in 2008.

Prior to midwifery, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Plant Biology from University of Guelph and pursued graduate studies at University of Calgary, focusing on molecular biology.

In addition to clinical practice, Krista contributes to the advancement of the profession through leadership and education. She serves as a clinical preceptor and adjunct faculty at TMU for midwifery students. She is actively involved in the provincial governance of Midwifery through the Association of Ontario Midwives Benefits Trust. She has also represented midwifery on the genetics committee of the SOGC and participated in developing clinical practice guidelines through the AOM.

There are not enough words to say thank you to the amazing, wonderful, and talented Eileen Williams who retired today from her position as Unit Secretary on Labour and Delivery. Eileen has worked at NYGH for 36 years and it just won’t be the same around here 💔

Chances are that if you have had a baby at NYGH in the last 3 decades, or have come to work here, you were greeted by at some point in your journey by Eileen’s smiling face. Impeccably dressed, calm and collected, Eileen’s elegance still shines just as bright on her last day of work.

The “Duchess of the Desk” has kept our unit functioning through the decades. She has made an impact on so many of us. We could see by the hundreds of NYGH staff that came out to celebrate her retirement today how important she has been to us all.

We love you Eileen and will miss you dearly!! Enjoy your retirement and come visit soon ❤️ NYGHOBGYN

Thank you to this amazing NYGHOBGYN crew who were at the hospital this am for a mock OSCE at the crack of dawn on a Saturday morning. Our annual practice exam helps our graduates get a realistic picture of the actual Royal College oral exam.

We want to wish all of our PGY5s good luck! We remember going through it and we know how hard it is. We are so proud of you and can’t wait for this last step! You got this!! 🏆🥇💪🏽⭐️

Our team had a great turn out for Toronto Black Maternal Health Week to raise awareness about and acknowledge Black women’s maternal health disparities, highlight the pervasive systemic inequities in healthcare leading to catastrophic outcomes for Black families and amplify the voices of grieving mothers and families who have suffered loss.

This event took place from April 11-17. We wanted to send a special shout out those who attended Mino Fest on April 11. This event brought in many leaders to discuss this year’s theme which was “Navigating Data and Systems in Perinatal and Reproductive Health Care”. This session was attended by our amazing Hanna and Tayisha (our nurses from L and D) Dr. Tunde-Byass and Dr. Joycelyn Cook who spoke about building a national framework for accountability and equity.

On April 13 we were proud to have hosted Professionals day at NYGH that featured our CEO, Dr. Everton Gooden, president of the OMA, Dr Zainab Abdurrahman, Ms. Dolkar and Dr. Tunde Byass from NYGHOBGYN who had an enlightening discussion about Black Maternal Health in Canada.

Thanks to everyone to participated and came out to show support for this important event that we are so proud to be a part of!!

Dr Satkunaratnam and Dr Deane along with our amazing team making a difference at NYGH!!!

Dr. Satkunaratnam and I discussed my options, and I made the difficult decision to proceed with a hysterectomy. As a woman, it was not an easy choice, but it was the right one for me because it offered hope of finally being free from years of suffering.

Thinking of applying for the CanSAGE fellowship at NYGH? We sat down with the amazing and talented Dr Michelle Anderson who is completing her fellowship with us this year.

Q) Hi Michelle! What’s a day in the life of a CanSAGE fellow at NYGH?

A) On a typical day I am in the operating room with the MIGS Staff, OR start usually 745am and finishing around 330pm, with rounding on any inpatients. Friday afternoons I supervise the acute gynecology clinic, supporting our senior residents. Additional clinic exposure around 1-3 times per month in one of our MIGS staff gynecology clinics. With support of the team, I also spend a few days a month at the University of Toronto to complete my Masters in quality improvement.

Q) What’s your favorite component of the NYGH fellowship?

A) Definitely the people and community at NYGH! The entire team has been supportive and it is an amazing learning environment. Plus the high surgical volume with the variety of cases.

Q) What’s your favourite surgical procedure?

A) My favourite procedure is a total laparoscopic hysterectomy, I find it especially rewarding because of the significant impact it can have on a patient’s quality of life.

Q) What’s the most important thing you’ve learned so far?

A) So many things, but perhaps one of the most important things I’ve learned is aligning the surgical goals with the patient goals.

Thanks so much Michelle! We are so exited to see what you do next!! Thanks for being an amazing fellow and taking such great care of our patients!!
