Your fingers have a high amount of sensory and motor neurons. When you bring your attention to your fingers, you are effectively taking over your mental load. This forces any thoughts you may be having to cease, bringing you into your current task, forcing you into the present. This simple exercise can have an incredibly calming effect.

Pause for a moment and try the "Find Your Fingers" exercise. Notice how it brings your attention back to the here and now, grounding you and providing a brief but powerful mental reset.

So where does this "opposites attract" idea come from? More than being the general norm, it's actually contextual. For example, in situations where one partner is more dominant and the other submissive, you may find greater satisfaction in their unions. Another example is if one partner tends to be more insecure; in that case, they may be attracted to more confident individuals.

To sum it up, similarities seem to drive attraction, while complementary attraction tends to be more contextual.

A fascinating study by Busby, Walker, and Holman (2011), titled "The association of childhood trauma with perceptions of self and the partner in adult romantic relationships," reveals how childhood trauma shapes our perceptions in romantic relationships. Here's a snapshot:

The study examined over 5,400 couples, comparing those with and without a history of childhood physical abuse. Evidence suggests that trauma influences how individuals perceive their partners rather than the selection of partners. Individuals with a history of childhood trauma tend to view both themselves and their partners as more neurotic and conflictual.
