Snow Day Safety Alert for Our Seniors! 🏠🧡
The snow is beautiful, but winter weather brings unique risks for older adults. Let's work together to keep our elderly loved ones and neighbors safe and warm today!
Here are a few essential tips:
🚫 Skip the Shoveling: Shoveling heavy snow is extremely strenuous and a major cause of heart emergencies in seniors. Please hire a professional or ask a neighbor for help!
🧊 Stay Inside & Avoid Falls: Icy walkways are a serious fall hazard. The safest place is indoors. If going out is absolutely necessary, wear sturdy, non-slip boots and use handrails.
🌡️ Keep it Cozy: Older adults are more susceptible to hypothermia. Ensure the thermostat is set to a comfortable temperature (at least 68°F/20°C) and dress in warm layers, even inside.
🔦 Prepare for Outages: Have flashlights, spare batteries, blankets, and non-perishable snacks ready in an easily accessible spot in case the power goes out.
📞 Stay Connected: Isolation can be a big challenge during storms. Check in on elderly relatives and neighbors with a phone call or video chat to make sure they are okay and have what they need.
