There are many reasons to love green tea, particularly if it's loose-leaf. I'll get to the importance of that last part in a minute. But first, let's talk DNA DAMAGE... A randomized placebo-controlled trial found that drinking 1 cup a day has been shown to lower DNA damage in white blood cells by 30% and increase the levels of genes that encode for DNA repair enzymes. Mitigating DNA damage and repairing it when it happens is of great interest, whether we're talking general aging or cancer. Increased DNA damage may be a major reason our tissues lose NAD+ during aging: the enzyme that is crucial for DNA repair requires it to function.
TEA AND THE BRAIN. Other studies have found that individuals who drank green tea, oolong tea, or black tea 4x/week for 25 years had more efficient brain connections in certain brain regions. In a separate but related study, tea consumption was linked to a 50% reduction in cognitive decline.
I could go on about a great deal of interesting research on green tea, but here is the mildly infuriating part: a new study found that pyramid-shaped mesh bags that allow bigger leaves in them when they are steeped in hot water release billions of plastic microparticles into the tea. Sometimes it's even the nicer, seemingly high-quality tea bags that are made of plastic. So that's at least one good reason to stick to loose leaf.

Migraines are a big problem. They affect millions of people and are responsible for billions of dollars in healthcare costs. In fact, they’re one of the most common reasons people end up the emergency room.⠀

The question we really need to ask isn’t, “how do you treat a migraine?” but rather, “what’s causing the migraines?”⠀

So, remember: migraines are not all the same. You have to find the underlying cause. Here are some simple things you can do to identify and eliminate what might be causing your migraines:⠀

1. Do an elimination diet. Get rid of the common food allergens. Use my book The UltraSimple Diet as a guide.⠀

2. Try magnesium. Take 300 to 600 milligrams twice a day in the form of magnesium glycinate or citrate.⠀
⠀
3. Try riboflavin or vitamin B2, 400 milligrams a day. It will turn your urine a dark yellow, but don’t worry about it.⠀
⠀
4. Balance your hormones to stop premenstrual migraines by exercising; eliminating caffeine, alcohol, and sugar; and eating a diet rich in plant foods, especially the broccoli family, flax seeds and tofu as well as other vegetables, and fruits.⠀

5. Try melatonin, which has been shown to help relieve migraines. Take 1 or 2 milligrams at night.⠀
