Recently three patients living in Nova Scotia shared their experiences using Mepilex Border Post-Op and Mepilex Border Post-Op Ag dressings after surgery.

Here is what they said:

💬 Corrine from Cape Breton emphasized the extended wear time and protection gave her peace of mind after a mastectomy from advanced breast cancer. Her incisions healed amazingly well, and she was reassured knowing the dressings maintained the right moisture level while also preventing bacteria from entering the wound site.

💬 Kevin from Halifax was impressed with how quickly his scar healed after he underwent two mitral valve repair surgeries just weeks apart.

💬 And Peter from Halifax explained having the ability to shower so shortly after his operation meant he could focus on the other things he needed to do to recover from heart bypass surgery, open heart surgery and a knee replacement.

Thank you Corrine, Kevin and Peter for sharing these experiences. Your words reinforce the important role silicone post-op dressings play in improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Mepitel One is our single-sided wound contact layer featuring Safetac soft silicone technology. It’s designed to support undisturbed healing and can be gently removed on skin tears where the flap is fully or partially intact.

To apply and remove a Mepitel One dressing:
▫️Cleanse the wound and place the skin flap back
▫️Apply the dressing in the direction of the flap
▫️Remove the dressing in the direction of the removal symbol

Mepitel One can be used for many wound types—from skin tears to skin abrasions, surgical incisions, partial thickness burns, traumatic wounds, partial and full thickness grafts, radiated skin, and leg and foot ulcers.

This gentle dressing can also be used as a protective layer on blisters and areas with fragile skin.

📊 The benefits of using soft silicone dressings to promote healing of skin tears is backed by evidence.

Results from a 2020 randomized control study by Kevin Woo and Kimberly LeBlanc, presented at WoundCon, suggest that silicone dressings lead to quicker complete wound closure and faster mean healing time compared to non-silicone dressings.

→ Mepitel One showed clinical benefits in the treatment of skin tears Type 1 and Type 2, and Mepilex Border Flex in the treatment of skin tears Type 2 and 3.

→ 88% of patients in the Treatment group achieved complete wound closure by week 2, compared to 28% in the Control group.

→ In elderly patients (mean age 82.9), skin tears treated with soft silicone dressings healed over 50% faster compared with conventional non-adherent dressings (approximately 8 days versus 20 days).

: Skin tears affect 14.7% of older adults living in Canadian long-term care facilities.

Skin tears can cause unnecessary pain and suffering for patients and create added complexity for healthcare professionals. With limited published guidance, these wounds are frequently misidentified or mismanaged. This leads to complications such as pain, infection and delayed healing.

By recognizing patients at risk, preventing skin injuries, and using appropriate non-adherent dressings, Canadian clinical nurses can make a meaningful difference in patient outcomes.

occur more often than people may realize. More than 1.5 million institutionalized adults per year are at risk of developing skin tears.

This common skin condition affects individuals with increased skin vulnerability. It is estimated that the incidence of skin tears will become one of the largest problems in wound care with an increasing elderly population, although the critically ill, neonates and paediatric populations are also at risk.

Risk factors for skin tears include:
- Extremes of age
- Dry, fragile skin
- Previous skin tears
- History of falls
- Impaired mobility
- Dependent activities of daily living
- Mechanical trauma
- Comorbidities
- Polypharmacy
- Impaired cognition
- Malnutrition

are high-risk, acute wounds—but they don’t always present that way. They are often missed, misidentified or mistreated, resulting in a skin tear becoming a more complicated wound. This prolongs healing and impacts quality of life for patients.

Fortunately, skin tears are easy to treat with the right tools, training, and care plan. When assessed accurately and correctly, skin tears can heal within approximately four weeks.

Be skin tear aware.

The holiday season in Canada is a time for warmth and togetherness – with more cooking, candles and hot drinks. It also means a higher risk of burns. Protect the ones you love with these six simple steps:
– Lower the temperature of hot water taps
– Use a kettle with a short cord so it can’t easily be grabbed
– Keep hot drinks away from table and counter edges
– Create a kid-free zone at least one-meter around hot items
– Don’t drink hot liquids through a straw
– Turn the handles of pans inward

Share these tips and help keep families safe this holiday season.
