In their Fall economic statement, the federal government pledged to make psychotherapy services exempt from HST charges moving forward.

What that means practically is that the average session cost at Whiteboard will decrease by app. $20/session once the pledge becomes law.

We are thrilled to be able to pass those savings onto you, the client, and we can’t wait to begin lowering those payable amounts sometime in the new year!

I am thrilled to announce that I am restarting my clinical supervisory practice at Whiteboard Counselling. This will take shape in the form of bi-weekly, 90-minute group supervisory sessions (max. of 6-8 participants) starting Friday, January 12, 2024. The cost for participants will be $90 per 90-minute session, and the group will be open with no fixed end date.

My desire with the group is to share best practices, reinforce strong ethical principles, foster community, share private practice growth techniques, and support you both as a therapist and as a person.

I believe the group would be a good fit for therapists who:

- Are in private practice, or who might want to do so in the future
- Have an eclectic therapy approach, with a particular grounding in Rogers’ common factors
- Regard clients from a non-pathologizing lens
- Favour case conceptualizations using a Narrative / Person-Centred point of view
- Recognize both the art and the science of psychotherapy and wish to address both elements in their work

I am also making myself available for Individual and Dyadic supervision support beginning in 2024 as well. The rates for these sessions are $175 (Individual) and $100/person (Dyadic).

To learn more about the supervision group—and to reserve your spot on the initial start-up list—please email us at info@whiteboardcounselling.com

The #1 question that potential clients ask us is ‘How long before I can see a therapist?’ Most of them are stunned when we tell them that we schedule most consult calls within 1-2 business days of first contact, and most initial therapy sessions within 3-5 days.

Why are we such outliers in the therapy world when it comes to ease and speed of scheduling?

It’s simply because one of our dominant values as a clinic is to provide the same level of customer service that you would expect from any other business or institution that you frequent.

We know how nerve wracking it can be to reach out for therapy. That’s why we have staffed our clinic with staff and therapists who understand what you are going through and who make every effort to support you in a timely manner.

When we understand who we are, we can unlock amazing truths about why particular issues weigh us down or trip us up.

This is why the idea of understanding our personal identity should be such a crucial part of any therapy journey.

Just look at how an uncertain identity affects the following issues:

Anxiety - Unsure of how we fit into our own future
Self esteem - Unsure of our value as as individual
Relationship issues - Unsure of how we should give or receive love from others
Career issues - Unsure of our happiness and abilities
Parenting concerns - Unsure of our values and whether we can trust putting them into practice

In each of these instances, the idea of identity is paramount in helping the person understand their situation in a new and empowering way. And this is the heartbeat of effective narrative therapy.

The notion of conditional versus unconditional love is a huge factor in any relational dynamic.

For some people, conditional love is all they’ve ever known in their family history or parental model. They view love as a ‘actions in / affection out’ model, and they typically have a very hard time with blanket expressions of closeness or devotion.

These sorts of individuals can make for particularly trying romantic partners, especially for people who have been raised with more of an unconditional love paradigm.

In situations like this it is imperative for the couple to understand their respective pasts, communicate freely and respectfully about the issue, and offer each other the grace and the space to speak up when the other’s biases are showing.

A lot of people think that the process of therapy is about making the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ decision, or discovering the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ path.

I totally disagree.

As I often tell my clients, ‘What the hell qualifies me as a therapist to know what’s right or wrong for you?’

When we take the posture that our therapist can dictate what is right or wrong for us, we naturally disempower ourselves.

The goal that should be set in our interactions with our therapist then, should be for our VALUES to be exposed, questioned and ultimately clarified.

Because when this happens, YOU gain self awareness, YOU get a deeper understanding of yourself, and YOU remain in the drivers seat for your own decision making.
