DID YOU KNOW: SCIATICA presents with sharp, burning and radiating pain from the lower spine, down the buttock and back of the leg. It is caused by irritation or compression of the Sciatic Nerve.

DID YOU KNOW: HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT) is often considered during Menopause, however its use is controversial.
HRT can increase risk of blood clots and ischemic stroke risk, especially in the first year of use. Estrogen-only and combination Estrogen-Progesterone is linked to increased risk.
The risk is lower for women under age 60.
The risk is higher for women >60 and with existing vascular disease (high blood pressure, to***co use, heart disease).
The risk is lower with transdermal patch as it bypasses the liver, where clotting factors can be stimulated.

DID YOU KNOW: RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION for Pain Management uses image guided (X-RAY) treatments to precisely heat an area of the offending nerve. This prevents pain signal from being generated from that nerve. This is a long term pain treatment and is used to treat pain generating from areas such as the neck and lower back. A diagnostic nerve block typically precedes this treatment, in order to confirm the source of and predict potential degree of pain relief.

DID YOU KNOW: The most common injuries in snowfall are slips and falls, leading to wrist fractures, ankle sprains, knee injuries and head trauma. Back pain for snow shoveling, and frostbite/hypothermia can also occur.
Preventative methods include:
1. Take short, slow steps with knees slightly bent and arms extended on your sides (like a Penguin!)
2. Swing both legs out then stand, when exiting a vehicle
3. Opt for rubber soled shoes with good tread
4. When shoveling, keep the knees slightly bent to avoid back injury
5. Take frequent breaks and avoid overexertion
Minor injuries can be treated with RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
** Older adults, particularly those over age 65, can suffer a severe injury even as a result of a 'minor fall.' Always seek medical attention after an injury.

DID YOU KNOW: Calcitionin Gene Related Peptide (CGRP) is a pain-signaling Neuropeptide involved in Headaches. CGRP Monoclonal Antibodies (CGRP mAB) are injectable medications that block CGRP and thus reduce Headache severity and frequency, and are approved for Migraine Prevention.
GALCANEZUMAB is approved for prevention of Episodic CLUSTER HEADACHES as well, and may be most effective when used in combination with other preventative medications.

DID YOU KNOW: High Wind speed, High Humidity and Low Barometric pressure can increase PAIN SEVERITY.
Barometric Pressure changes can causes tissues to expand, increasing pressure on Arthritic joints.
Nerves may be more exposed in Arthritic joints, and sensitive to pressure changes.
HELPFUL STRATEGIES include dressing in layers, staying active including low impact exercises, warm baths/showers, and pharmacologic treatments with abortive and preventative medications.

DID YOU KNOW: VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY can lead to fatigue, low energy, bone and muscle pain, weakness, impaired immune system, hair loss, low mood (including Seasonal Affective Disorder).

VITAMIN D production reduces in the winter due to shorter sunlight exposure, but can still be acquired through diets rich in fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), fortified foods (milk, cereals), mushrooms and eggs.
