DID YOU KNOW: DYSTONIA is a movement disorder that cause muscles to contract involuntarily. This can present as twisting motions or other abnormal movements and pain. Focal Dystonia is abnormal movement of one part of the body. Some examples include Cervical (neck) Dystonia, Blepharospasm (eyelids blinking), Oromandibular Dystonia (jaw/tongue), Laryngeal (vocal) or activity induced such as Writer's or Musician's Dystonia.
Treatment includes oral medication, physical therapy and neurotoxin injection to affected muscles.

DID YOU KNOW: ARTHRITIS results from loss of cartilage layer lining the joints, leading to swelling and redness of a joint. Common symptoms include stiffness, joint pain and decreased range of motion.
The most common are OSTEOARTHRITIS and RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS.
Imaging such as XRAY, CT scan, MRI or Ultrasound can help diagnose.
Treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, steroids (oral or injected to the joint), and Surgery.

DID YOU KNOW: BRAIN FOG is a common term used to describe a constellation of symptoms. It is generally caused by systemic conditions affecting the brain or certain neurologic conditions.
Symptoms include: poor concentration, reduced mental clarity, mild confusion, difficulty focusing/finding the words, mental fatigue and slower cognitive processing.
Neurologic conditions such as Migraine, Parkinson's Disease, Dementia and Stroke can cause brain fog.
Other conditions that can cause Brain Fog include anxiety, depression, menopause, thyroid disorders, substance abuse, sleep apnea.

DID YOU KNOW: DIABETES can cause multiple Neurological complications.
These include:
1. Peripheral Neuropathy - numbness, pain, tingling affecting distal most extremities such as feet and fingers first; most common
2. Autonomic Neuropathy - bladder, digestion, heart rate
3. Proximal Neuropathy - least common, affects nerves in hips, thighs, buttocks.
Diabetes is also a risk factor for Cognitive Decline and Stroke.
Speak with your family doctor on checking for and managing high blood sugar levels.

DID YOU KNOW: Hormonal changes associated with MENSTRUAL CYCLE may affect Perception of Pain.
During Follicular phase when Estrogen levels are high and Progesterone is low, patients can experience lower pain sensitivity, i.e. higher threshold to experience pain.
During Ovulation and Luteal phase when Estrogen +/-Progesterone levels are high, pain sensitivity may be higher as well, i.e. experience pain more intensely.
During Me**es, as both Estrogen and Progesterone levels drop rapidly, pain sensitivity can be high.
The extent of hormonal impact on Pain Perception is variable, and not consistent across all women.

DID YOU KNOW: HEAT STROKE is caused by exposure to high temperatures for a prolonged time, causing the body temperature to exceed 40C (104F). Heat Stroke is an Emergency.
Symptoms include:
1. Change in behavior/mental status: confusion, agitation, seizures, coma.
2. Nausea/Vomiting
3. Rapid shallow breathing
4. Rapid Heart Rate
5. Headache
Heat Stroke can lead to vital organ damage and death.
Treatment includes cooling down the body and requires urgent medical attention.

Chronically elevated Blood Pressure can result in a variety of medical problems including Kidney disease, Heart disease and Stroke.
Routine Blood Pressure monitoring can help identify and prevent long term complications of Elevated Blood Pressure.

DID YOU KNOW: SEASONAL MIGRAINES occur more frequently during specific times of the year. Triggers include seasonal allergens, barometric pressure changes, temperature, humidity and sunlight exposure. Spring and Fall are typical triggers for most Migraineurs including those with Seasonal Migraines.
Tracking headaches with a Headache Diary and Hydration are key players in Headache control.
Short term Prophylaxis for Seasonal Migraines can be considered.

1. Omega 3 Fatty Acides: anti-inflammatory properties; eg fatty fish, nuts.
2. Vitamin D: improves pain tolerance; eg fatty fish, egg yolk, mushrooms, dairy.
3. Magnesium: helps muscle relaxation, modulates pain-related chemical activity; eg soy, nuts, whole grain.
