DID YOU KNOW: The most common injuries in snowfall are slips and falls, leading to wrist fractures, ankle sprains, knee injuries and head trauma. Back pain for snow shoveling, and frostbite/hypothermia can also occur.
Preventative methods include:
1. Take short, slow steps with knees slightly bent and arms extended on your sides (like a Penguin!)
2. Swing both legs out then stand, when exiting a vehicle
3. Opt for rubber soled shoes with good tread
4. When shoveling, keep the knees slightly bent to avoid back injury
5. Take frequent breaks and avoid overexertion
Minor injuries can be treated with RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
** Older adults, particularly those over age 65, can suffer a severe injury even as a result of a 'minor fall.' Always seek medical attention after an injury.
