As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, my approach is rooted in understanding the deep, often unconscious processes that shape your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. We’ll explore not just your present concerns but how past experiences, especially early relationships, continue to influence your current life. This form of therapy looks at patterns in your relationships, ways you defend against painful feelings, and unconscious conflicts. The goal is to bring these into awareness, which can help you gain insight into yourself and make meaningful changes.

We’ll take time to explore your emotions in depth, and I’ll pay attention to things like recurring themes or the ways you avoid certain topics. The relationship between us, called the therapeutic alliance, is also key. Often, the dynamics we observe between us in therapy may mirror patterns you experience in other relationships, giving us rich material to work with. My role is to help you reflect on these processes, to achieve gradual change and healing.

Traditionally, mental health has been a stigmatized topic, particularly among successful professionals. Fortunately, we are entering a transformative era where the topic of mental health is publicly addressed, public health officials and policy makers put it on top of their priority lists, and successful individuals including athletes and politicians speak up about their most personal experiences.

Success comes with its fair share of psychological pressures. Professionals at the height of accomplishment often grapple with a unique set of stressors and expectations including relationship issues, substance use, impostor syndrome and more. Therapy can help overcome resulting feelings of anxiety,

Despite great advances in knowledge and awareness regarding mental health, a shadow of shame continues to surround the issue. This shame can create profound barriers to seeking support, understanding, and healing and can have a deep impact on those who may be reluctant to seek help.

Shame and stigma around mental health creates barriers to seeking mental health support. Fear of judgement, stereotypes, and personal expectations can lead affected individuals to delay treatment, become misunderstood, lonely and isolated. It also leads to lack of necessary support. Mental health is a term that carries profound meaning in our lives. It is not simply a reflection of our emotional and psychological well-being, but it also has a profound impact on friends, family, and community surrounding us. Mental illness can put severe strain on relationships. Supporting a loved one with depression, anxiety, or PTSD while also exercising adequate self-care and maintaining healthy boundaries can be a difficult balance to strike.

The "Anniversary Effect" refers to a unique set of unsettling feelings, thoughts, or memories that occur on the anniversary of a significant experience such as the loss of a loved one or other traumatic events. As a society, we have become less sociable. We tend to avoid eye contact when people walk past us. When we use public transportation, we remain to ourselves, looking at the ground. When we stand in line, we stare at our cell phone screens. These common scenarios used to be opportunities to connect with other human beings, start a chat with a stranger about mundane things — the weather, the traffic, the long line ups. None of these conversations are life changing, nor do they provide us with deep intellectual stimulation. They do, however, provide us with an essential and crucial human need — the need for connection, the knowledge that we belong somewhere, that we can relate to others. Connecting with other humans grounds us emotionally. For a moment, we are not alone — we share a common experience, and we have an opportunity to be kind to someone for no apparent reason.

Taking care of aging parents can unearth a variety of emotions. It can raise questions about mortality and the finiteness of our earthly existence; it can bring back forgotten or supressed unresolved conflicts; it can open up old wounds.
