VOICE for children who are deaf and hard of hearing

VOICE for children who are deaf and hard of hearing VOICE for children who are deaf and hard of hearing helps children with hearing loss to maximize their listening and spoken language potential 🇨🇦

VOICE for deaf and hard of hearing children was established in the early ’60s by parents to offer support to other families with children who were deaf and hard of hearing. These Toronto parents wanted their children to be educated alongside their hearing peers in mainstream schools. By working collectively they succeeded in achieving this goal and had the tremendous benefit of sharing information and providing support to one another.

⛸️ Hearing loss takes to the ice with 23-year-old Georgian Olympics ice dancer Diana Davis and her partner/husband Gleb Smolkin. Diana's bilateral sensorineural hearing loss resulted from an incorrect dosage of antibiotics at age two. Her coordination was affected, and the resulting safety concerns when performing jumps led to a switch from single figure skating to ice dance in 2016. Read Diana's story:

🎧 International Cochlear Implant Day | February 25

Today we join the global community in celebrating International Cochlear Implant Day—a day to raise awareness, share stories, and honour the life-changing impact of cochlear implants for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

This day is being celebrated internationally by CIICA (Cochlear Implant International Community of Action), bringing voices together from around the world to advocate for access, inclusion, and informed choices.

At VOICE, we stand with children, youth, families, and the CI community—celebrating communication, connection, and every unique listening journey. 💙

LISTENING FATIGUE is REAL for many of those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Here are some of the things in my Digital Resource Guide, I created to share awareness about fatigue and hearing loss:

https://www.mybattlecall.com/shop/p/listening-fatigue-for-children-with-hearing-loss

People who have hearing loss often have to work harder to listen than their hearing peers. Add masks/face coverings and it is extremely challenging.

It is not surprising this can cause fatigue and even exhaustion. Specifically, for kids in school. There are ways to support a child (or anyone) with hearing loss, in order to decrease the amount of fatigue experienced.

• First, create an optimal learning environment free of background noise. Rooms with carpet are more acoustically pleasing, and outside noise is minimized or eliminated by keeping doors and windows closed. Avoid playing radios and turn the television off.

• Utilize clear masks. Move group discussions outdoors so masks can be removed. *edited to add...this was a recommendation during covid.

• Provide listening breaks. Schedule intentional times throughout the day when relying on hearing is limited.

• Ensure the person speaking is facing the child. Repeat questions asked by others before answering and speak within 3-6 feet from the child. Try to facilitate communication that focuses on one person at a time.

• Utilize FM systems, wireless microphones, and sound-fields when possible.

• Always use closed-captions on audio-visuals.

• Avoid covering your mouth when speaking. Speak clearly and naturally.

• Allow children to express their frustration. Being understood is one of the keys to helping a child feel accepted and understood.

Encourage kids to advocate for themselves while also ensuring adults continue to offer accessibility and support.
