🚨Have you seen or experienced this before?🚨
This woman was sitting quietly, apparently calmly on the “tube” (aka subway). As it began to move you noticed she was preparing herself and as it started to increase in the amount of noise and loud clangs and screech of the car on the track she had to cover her ears as tightly as she could, closed her eyes and almost held her breath. I witnessed this every single time we went between stops. Then as we got to the stop she would sit up, compose herself and take some breaths. You could see each time she hoped she would get through it but she didn’t for the 8 stops I sat across from here.

This is someone who is surviving not thriving in her environment. She is able bodied, was on her way to have a full day yet was struggling with something she had to be exposed to every single day. This is a sign of dysregulation of her nervous system, retained primitive reflexes I can almost guarantee and sensory processing challenges.

In practice I see this every day. The kids and adults that get by, may even be described as highly accomplished in school and life/career but are actually in survival mode. These are the ones who get missed and fall through the cracks and who I love working with to ensure we help them express life as fully as possible, enjoy experiences they have and truly thrive and function at their highest potential, whatever that may be.

Thumb and finger sucking are a tool. As infants it can occur due to our primitive reflexes such as the rooting and suck reflex. After the 4-6 months of age and beyond it can become a tool to help us with nervous system regulation, stimulation of the vagus nerve, stimulate the nasal-palatal receptors of trigeminus (the “spot” where our tongue should rest), help obtain muscular balance, release physical and psychological tension. (Ferrante, 2015) This is noticed even more for kiddos who have tightened frenulum or decreased tongue function limiting its contact with the roof of their mouth!

When we work to help the nervous system 🧠 regulate (chiropractic care) and we address any Retained Primitive Reflexes we see obvious changes in this behaviour! Talk therapy, conversations and other tools can help absolutely but often the kiddos have to discover another strategy to assist when they need help feeling calm.

Addressing the root cause (nervous system dysregulation) and our neurodevelopment can be a game changer when it comes to thumb and finger sucking.

This amazing mumma is able to receive her first postnatal adjustment using one pillow to help with her breast engorgement and the other to take any pressure off her c-section scar!
