Welcome, and Congratulations on your upcoming birth. I’m a certified Labour and Birth Doula through Doula Training Canada! I have three wonderful children, and with each child I experienced 3 very different births. At my first birth, I had the most wonderful nurse, she

seemed to always be at my side even though she kept telling me it was a busy night. She made sure I wasn’t in the same position as what she left me in, and kept coaching my husband and I, all the way through. Leaving the hospital with our newborn I said to my husband “WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE HER”, I didn’t realize fully what I meant by that comment until I was able to reflect on my 3 births years later, and see what a positive impact she made in my life, and in that birth experience. I then started to research on how I could help others (without needing medical background) achieve the same birth experience as we did. "A doula (/ˈduːlə/), also known as a birth companion and post-birth supporter, is a non-medical person who assists a woman before, during, and/or after childbirth, as well as her spouse and/or family, by providing physical assistance and emotional support.” -Wikipedia

I found Doula Training Canada, and my journey to become a Birth Doula began. We all deserve to have support, guidance and encouragement, through one of the most memorable days of our lives. We are strong as women but what I’ve learned and experienced, is that we are even stronger when we have a great support system. I'm looking forward to speaking with you, and discussing your individual needs, and wants in having the best birth experience possible.

The FEAR-TENSION-PAIN Cycle in Labour!

WHAT IS IT❓

When you have fear or anxiety about childbirth, your body’s natural response is to tense up during labour. When you are tense this increases pain. The increased pain you feel causes more fear and the vicious cycle continues.

LET’S BREAK THIS CYCLE❗️

Dr. Grantly Dick-Read was an obstetrician in the early 1900’s and wrote the book
“Childbirth without fear”
He introduced and suggested to interrupt this cycle by:
⭐️Reducing fear by educating women about what happens during childbirth.
⭐️Reduce tension by encouraging relaxation, which therefore reduces pain.

Remembering to use the acronym B.R.A.I.N in labour is a helpful tool 👍

Any questions you may have in labour will determine your options by using B.R.A.I.N

1. What are the benefits if I do that now?
2. What are the risks?
3. What are the alternatives?
4. (Not a question but) What is your intuition telling you at that moment? How are you feeling?
5. What if I do nothing?

This is so helpful when making informed decisions about your labour/birth and feeling confident in the choices you make.

An important job/role of a Doula is to provide you with evidence based information. You've probably heard the term "knowledge is power" well it wouldn't be true without the information. When you are provided with information it makes you feel more confident in asking great questions and making informed decisions during your labour/birth.

Couples who are supported by a doula find it easier to ask questions about their options and being able to express their fears. Those who did not have a doula present have said they were afraid to ask questions and if they did, they received short answers.

One thing to remember with a doula present or not is to use that power of information. Don't forget to ask questions....lots and lots of questions! Even if you think they are silly or the staff has no time, ask anyway.
