Happy Fall!

Fall is a wonderful time of the year when leaves turn different colours and pumpkin spice flavours come to life!

Aside from pumpkin flavoured pies and lattes, did you know that pumpkin itself has quite a few health benefits?

(1) Like carrots and sweet potatoes, pumpkins give you a beta carotene boost. Your body turns this into Vitamin A, which is important for vision, the immune system, reproductive system, and other systems in the body.

(2) Speaking of the immune system, pumpkins also provide vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, and folate. This contributes to your ability to fight bacteria, germs, and promotes healing.

(3) Just 1 cup of pumpkin gives you 200% of your daily vitamin A intake!

(4) Pumpkin seeds = potassium 🎃 Potassium helps lower blood pressure and decreases risk of stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Just remember, you don’t get all these amazing health benefits by consuming pumpkin baked goods and sugar packed drinks. Try making pumpkin soups, pumpkin hummus, and roasting pumpkin seeds!

Obesity is a chronic disease that needs to be (and can be) treated. This is a fundamental concept that changes our perception on weight loss completely and how we manage it.

By removing biases, supporting the individual, and addressing obesity as it should be, we have a totally different outlook on weight management. It becomes about the individual rather than presumptive "faults" of the individual.

Did you know that there are multiple factors that go into your energy intake and expenditure? This is a concept that can often be oversimplified by "calories in < calories out" but it's much more than that. Let's break it down!

Your body gets energy by eating. When you consume calories, your body uses these proteins, fats, and carbohydrates as fuel for you to perform your daily functions and tasks.

Your body expends this energy throughout the day in many ways. This includes exercise (think running, walking, going to the gym), your resting metabolism (crazy, right?) and daily activity (think moving your body throughout the day and performing tasks).

Although it appears straight forward, there are MANY variables with this system when it comes to each individual person. We also know that this can be overwhelming to navigate on your own, especially when weight loss is an overall goal for your health.

How much fiber do you need a day?

The recommended daily intake of fiber is 25 grams for adult women and 38 grams for adult men. On average, American adults consume 10-15 grams of fiber a day only, which is much less than the recommended daily intake!

Including enough fiber in your diet is important for many health reasons. Fiber regulates your bowl movements and maintains your bowl health. It also helps maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels. It can even aid in achieving healthier weight by making you feel more full and reducing the absorption of sugars from your food 🙌

FUN FACT: Did you know that your body does not actually absorb any nutrients from fiber. YES! Your body cannot digest fiber. Its benefits come from the transit of fiber in the gut.
