Do you need two hearing aids?

Do you wear a monocle on one eye or wear glasses on both eyes? Most people have vision loss in both eyes and therefore wear glasses for both eyes. So, the answer is, if you have hearing loss in both of your ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids (there are certain exceptions). Wearing two hearing aids will allow you to locate where sound is coming from. The faster you can turn and find a speaker, the better your chances are of understanding them. Also, wearing two hearing aids significantly improves your ability to hear speech in difficult listening situations. Finally, you get a fuller and richer sound quality when listening through two hearing aids instead of one.

Why see an Audiologist?

Audiologists are allied health professionals with a Master's Degree in Clinical Science in Audiology. To stay in good standing with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario, we must meet specific practice guidelines. Our knowledge and training in hearing sciences are extensive, which allows us to have a broad scope of practice and interpret the results of a hearing test and hearing aid fitting rigorously. I have been a Registered Audiologist in Ontario for over 10 years, helping hundreds of patients in Oakville and across Canada hear better.

Rechargeable vs. Non-Rechargeable
Convenience -you don't have to change batteries; place the hearing aids in the charger at night for a full day (19-22 hours) of battery life. You don't have to keep track of batteries (purchasing and keeping them in your purse/car/work)

User Friendly - You don' t have to mess with the small batteries; this is especially important for patients with poor dexterity
Eco-Friendly - batteries are bad for the environment when put into a landfill.

It saves you time and money - You don't have to buy more hearing aid batteries! Rechargeable vs. Non-rechargeable

Non-Rechargeable (Disposable) PROS
Convenience - this was also a pro for rechargeable, but it is in a different context. If your battery dies, swap it for a new one; with rechargeable, you cant do that; you will have to find a place to change the battery.

Size of hearing aids- lithium-ion batteries take up more space inside the hearing aid, and therefore those hearing aids are slightly larger.

Cost- lithium rechargeable hearing aids are more expensive than disposable; even if you consider the cost of batteries over the years, lithium-ion batteries last about 4-6 years and then need to be replaced, which is an average cost of $150 per battery

Reliability- not a HUGE advantage but rechargeable batteries sometimes can malfunction.

In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids are worn in the ear canal and are usually custom-fit, based on an impression taken by your audiologist at the time of your hearing aid consultation. Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aids sit behind or on top of the outer ear.

Your audiologist will discuss with you the pros and cons of each.
