What matters is what we do now. What matters is what we do next.
I want to thank everyone who has reached out after watching my last video to begin conversations. This in itself is a shift. Personally, professionally and in any business I'm involved with, I will continue to push the agenda forward of equality.
I am grateful to work in a team at where our shared vision is rooted in diversity. We are actively working on ways to offer more support in a thoughtful and meaningful way. While we do this work, please reach out to me personally or to the clinic if you have anything on your mind: questions, thoughts you're struggling with, or examples of support you need, be it directly related to health or otherwise.

A message from our team:

We stand here today, as a team founded on the basis of helping others and working together to achieve health and wellbeing for all. We have been trying to find the words to accurately represent our collective heartbreak and the individual and personal experiences that come up in response to the blatant and senseless racism that has come to the forefront over the past few months. As Canadians, many may want to believe racism doesn’t affect us. It does. It’s quieter, but it’s here.

We want you to know that we, individually and together in our team, stand for equality and will stand up against injustice. We are here for anyone who would like a safe space to talk about their experiences, to support their healing, or to ask questions.

We know many people are angry, confused and unsure where to start to learn more. As a clinic, we will be sharing resources and ways to become more involved. We will be finding ways to keep this conversation alive, because we know that you, like us, want to see real change.

To our black and brown family, we want you to know that we are mourning with you, we stand with you, and we are here for you in any way we can be. Your family is our family and your fight is ours.

✨This✨
The pause, space, and time for reflection we've been taking during this time can bring up a whole bunch of "stuff" we've been battling in our minds. The uneasiness and discomfort that comes along with our disrupted routines are often linked to deep questions about how we feel about ourselves. Quite often we've crafted our time specifically to avoid our inner demons. Whatever is coming up for you during this time, it's so important to practice some self compassion and remind yourself to be gentle. .
I'm reminded often of 's words: Treat yourself like you'd treat someone you love. ✨💙

The only thing we can focus on and control. Right now. This moment. ✨
Yesterday in our clinic's Instagram live, we talked about the impact that breath can have on bringing us into the present moment. The now. And how it can disrupt or shift us out of fear-based thinking that can surround "yesterday" (our past) or "tomorrow" (our future). So grateful for .rooted.therapy and the whole team for the conversation and insight on this concept 🥰
Challenge: Take a deeeeeeep breath and get focused on how you want to use the "now" we're given 💙

There seems to be an extra bit of magic in the air this New Year and I am 👏here.for.it👏
Yes, "resolutions" can elicit an eye roll from people, because we all know the stats on their success, but I have seen incredible transformation happen and I truly believe that they can hold immense power to change our behaviour. Whether it's a new year, the fact that this one's a new decade, or because you happen to have an inner light bulb go off after the holidays, do the thing! Seize the moment and take one simple step to cement your new goal. Nothing kills momentum quite like inaction. So do something (anything) to prove to yourself that you mean business. I'll be over here cheering you on 🥳
For 2020, I wish you new beginnings that push you out of your comfort zone, new opportunities that are dressed as challenges, and a ton of fun and laughter-filled memories as you create a new decade to kick butt in. Happy (belated) New Year everyone!!

Yesterday I did something WAY out of my comfort zone and the only way I got through it is by repeating this phrase to myself...so I thought I'd share it with you fine people 🥰
I decided a few weeks ago that I needed to prove something to myself, and it was that the only standing in my way was me 😳 ( ). I know through my work with patients that the mind can really prevent us from moving forward on our life goals when we allow it to. Our mind can convince us that the comfort zone is and what lies beyond it can't be worth the extra effort. That's because our brains want to protect us from the uncertainty, potential failure and anxiety that can come from trying something new and (pardon my French) sucking at it. We have to consciously turn the volume down on that worry wort voice and repeat words like this over and over until there's a semblance of comfort and willingness that emerges.
That's what I did yesterday when I did my first ever group CrossFit class 😳🤯😱 Miraculously I didn't die, vomit, vanish into thin air, break anything including my body, or make a fool out of myself (all scenarios I actually thought up 😂). I had an awesome time, I met a bunch of nice people, and I made it through the whole class 🥳.
Borrow this phrase anytime you're sticking your baby toe outside your own comfort zone. I hope it helps you as much as it helped me 🥰

Here's the thing about working with people you love and respect, it's the 🥰
Today I had two longtime patients walk into within minutes of one another and both comment on how much love is within our walls. I often hear from patients that our team makes them feel like family - and it makes my heart so stinking happy because that's not a feeling you can manufacture or construct. It's how people feel when they're with our team, because it's how we feel with each other. 👯
It's our goal and guiding vision to treat our patients like they're an extension of our family, and we do that by building a team of practitioners who love what they do and love doing it together. If you haven't already sensed, we're kind of obsessed with the idea that when we work together with a common goal in mind, we can achieve it all. After all, that's where the story of One Elephant comes from ☺️

✨Talking to you!✨
Start now. Even though it's a Wednesday and not the first of the month or the beginning of a new year 🤯 Don't wait until the stars align and the timing is perfect, or until you feel confident enough to do it. Just do the thing you've been wanting to do now, and know that you'll figure it out along the way (cuz you will).
When I look back at key moments in my life with perfect 20/20 vision (sidebar: why is vision so blurry in the moment and crystal clear later?!), I know what I regret and what I don't. I'm always proudest of the times I did the thing, not the times I let opportunities float on by. The times I started something before I truly felt primed and ready, had a few hiccups, but pulled through anyway, those are the moments that make me feel fulfilled. Not the times I watched my dream from afar. I'm fairly confident I'm not alone in this sentiment 😉
If this is a message you needed to hear today, awesome. Take that leap, make that step, and embrace the fear and uncertainty cuz it's so worth it on the other side when you're hanging out in the aftermath with 20/20 vision.
PS: This message is brought to you from my newest fear conquered, in the still-in-progress dream that is 🥰

"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much"...that's the story of our new clinic, One Elephant .
I struggle to find the words to accurately describe the feelings I have about this new chapter. Here are a few: grateful, proud, humbled, empowered, excited, emboldened, daring, sentimental, scared (AF)...these come close. .
Around this time last year, my professional future was unclear in my mind's eye. I knew that great things were ahead, but I didn't know the details. I knew I had incredible people in my life, but I didn't know how impactful they'd be or how instrumental they'd be in this journey. I knew so little, yet believed in so much. .
This is the "so much". This clinic is a little expression of the "much" that we've envisioned. With the best partners I could've dreamed up, .yaad and I poured ourselves into the vision we believed in, and stuck to our guns despite countless twists and turns on the path. I have so much pride and gratitude for the road we've traveled to get here, knowing we're about to turn a corner into a path we get to cultivate for ourselves while we serve others in the way we've always wanted to. It's been a labour of love and I cannot wait to share it with you. .
We open on December 1st, but you can start to see what we're all about now. Check out our website and to learn our story. To everyone who has been a part of this journey - I am so truly grateful 🥰 ( I tagged many of you but I'm sure missed some)

I have been told "no" literally and figuratively so many times that I've lost count. Many of the times, it was me telling myself "no" (and that's the hardest truth to face). But somewhere along the line, I gave less craps about the naysayers in the world and in my own head and decided to do the big scary thing. Here's my big scary thing:
I am so so so excited to share with you this next chapter of my life - one I've got incredible hope for. Coming soon (December 2019) to an Oakville near you...go check out our brand new clinic and pleeeease go see our website www.oneelephant.ca ☝️🥰
Ps: misfits, rebels, troublemakers and people who see the world differently...you're the ones who have my heart and who inspire me to just keep swimming 👊 ♥️

Full quote in all its Glory:
"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."

Can I get an Amen?? The oh so great has ingrained this in my head, and I'm so glad because I needed it about 1 gazillion times in 2019. (Yes, that's an accurate count). .
The last year and a half has been one giant test professionally, and it came to a head a few weeks ago with a chapter coming to a close. The clinic that I helped to co-found with my partner in crime .yaad 3.5 years ago has decided to move in a different direction with their model and clinical team. Since updating my patients that I'll no longer be practicing there from December onward, I've been asked a few times how I've felt about this, and I'm still unsure if I can put it into words. "Bittersweet" comes close. .
I know deep down, in that core part of myself that guides all of my big life decisions, that this is the . And I also know that there aren't any mistakes in this journey, just lessons upon lessons. I am weirdly at peace and know that the window I was working to open while anticipating this closing door, just got bigger and let in way more sunshine than I expected. .
I can't wait for the next chapter, because this story is just getting to the good part. And I also can't wait to share where I'll be growing my vision next. Stay tuned. We're just getting started. 🥰

I'd guess a bazillion. .
No judgment because many of us are in the same boat. Life is packed to the brim with all kinds of stuff, some good, some bad, some healthy and some downright destructive. We're juggling all the balls. And our poor lil brains are attempting to handle it all while maintaining our sanity, preserving our energy, and holding on to our relationships. Possible, sure. Practical, nope. .
It's Tuesday, so it's as good a day as any to reflect on this concept and figure out if something can give. Can you remove one thing from the to-do list? Can you say no to something (or if not "no", "not now"?) Can you close a tab?

✨ Spring Reset is upon us! ✨ .
I loooove the spring - there's something about the freshness in the air and the sunshine that shoots my motivation way up. I find this trend in my patients too and I often like to capitalize on the Springtime momentum to make big gains on those health goals we set on January 1st. (Oh yeaahhh remember those?! 😂)
Now's the time that I get asked the notorious question about my thoughts and feelings on detoxes. And my answer... It's complicated. The idea of being "on a detox" is completely flawed to begin with because our bodies are always detoxing. We're oversimplifying and making "trendy" a process that the body has nailed down since its existence. However, I will agree that the concept of recognizing we could "clean it up" when it comes to the food we eat, the drinks we drink, the thoughts we think and the air we breathe, has some validity. I take a more whole-body approach to "detox" and I talk about some of the systems I like to support when I get asked by patients to help them cleanse/detox/reset this time of year (but typically not before giving them a long drawn out explanation of why I dislike the word first 😂).
Read all about my main areas of focus for detoxing your body and how to do it simply and healthily in this blog post 👊

✨Thyroid Tuesday ✨
A decreased metabolic rate can result in classic thyroid symptoms like:
✨ Weight gain (or what I often see - resistant weight loss ie "trying everything" and seeing insufficient progress with weight loss efforts)
✨ Feeling cold
✨ Constipation, bloating, slow digestion
✨ Hair loss, shedding or thinning
✨ Low mood
✨ Fatigue
✨ Dry skin
✨ Brain fog
If the above sound like you, speak to a Naturopathic doctor or functional provider to get your thyroid tested comprehensively. A routine test is not enough to see functional changes, only to detect pathology - so stop bugging your GP to run these tests (because their job is to detect pathology) and see someone like me instead (whose job it is to improve your health/wellness functionally).

✨ Allow me to reintroduce myself ✨ Here are some things you may not know about me!
🔹I am a naturopathic doctor (in case you were wondering if I spelled "MD" wrong 😂) and I LOVE my job. On a daily basis I get to help people feel stronger and more empowered in their bodies and that gives me so much joy.
🔹I was born in India, but grew up in the Middle East (in Abu Dhabi), and moved to Canada when I was 11. I am so grateful to my parents for taking the huge leap of faith and moving to a new country, because this country has felt like home since day 1 😭
🔹My Myers Briggs personality type is INFJ aka "the Advocate", meaning I care deeply about morality and equality, and am most fulfilled when I can help people get to the heart of an issue (this is actually the main tenet of naturopathic medicine - "treat the cause"). After doing this test I finally understood why I always rooted for and wanted to help the underdog - in my practice I am most gratified by treating women and marginalized groups like people of colour, because I've seen (and research supports) how bias can trickle into medicine, causing these groups to sometimes get substandard care (I'm not about that injustice life 😑).
🔹I played piano from the age of 5 onwards and went to a performing arts highschool for it. Music is a huge love of mine - I played everything from jazz/blues to classical to my main man, Bach. To this day I cannot listen to instrumental music as "background" because my brain will automatically want to analyze the piece. A live piano performance can bring me to tears instantly 😢
Annnnddd rapid fire...
My food weaknesses: coffee, chocolate, red wine 🥰
A health hack I'm convinced will change the world: mindfulness 😌
A health trend I wish would go away: weight loss supplements/teas 😒
