How we connect with others shapes our sense of identity, purpose, and wellbeing.

For adults living with aphasia and communication disorders, barriers to support don't just affect speech — they affect everything.

This May, we're advocating for equitable access to communication support for every adult. Because when it's hard to find words, the right support changes everything. 💙

National Volunteer Week wouldn't be complete without recognizing the dedicated team working behind the scenes: our Board of Directors. 💙

While much of our work happens in conversation groups, these volunteers dedicate their time to the vital task of governing our non-profit. Because of their commitment to our mission, we can continue providing specialized, life-changing support for adults living with aphasia. They ensure that every decision we make helps our clients find their voices and stay connected.

To our Board: thank you for your vision, your expertise, and your heart for the aphasia community!

Continuing our National Volunteer Week spotlights with a huge thank you to Laura! 💙

Laura has been a vital part of the H-PCAP family since 2015. While she has served on our Board of Directors and as a global ambassador for aphasia awareness (literally carrying our flag across four continents!), her heart is currently with our Aphasia Book Club.

Working alongside our clinicians, Laura uses her creativity to make reading accessible again. Whether she’s preparing specialized resources or coordinating visits from authors like Nita Prose, she helps our clients rebuild their confidence and reconnect with the joy of a good story. 📖✨

We are so grateful for Laura’s decade of advocacy and her heart for this community. Here is why she loves volunteering with the aphasia book club.

Our National Volunteer Week celebrations continue! Today, we’re shouting out Jill, who has been an integral part of our Aphasia Conversation Groups since 2015. 💙

If you know Jill, you know she is the definition of "showing up." For a decade now, she’s brought a level of patience and genuine care that makes everyone feel instantly at ease. She helps create the kind of encouraging environment our clients need to work on their communication skills — and we (and our clients!) are so lucky to have her.

Here is what being part of this community means to Jill.

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’re kicking things off by celebrating the people who dedicate their time to helping our clients find their voice again. 💙

First up is Adriana, who has been a cornerstone of our community for 12 incredible years! Since 2014, Adriana has brought so much empathy and consistency to our Aphasia Conversation Groups. She has a gift for creating a safe, welcoming space where clients feel comfortable opening up. Because of her, so many individuals have been able to rebuild their confidence and find their voice again.

We asked Adriana why she loves volunteering within our aphasia groups.

📖 Aphasia Research Spotlight!

Can group conversation treatment for aphasia work online? 🤔
A recent study explored just that — comparing telepractice with in-person therapy.

✨ Findings:
- Both in-person and telepractice conversation groups improved communication outcomes compared to no treatment.
- In-person groups showed slightly broader gains, but telepractice still proved to be a meaningful and accessible option.

This research highlights the potential of virtual therapy to support people with aphasia, especially when in-person services aren’t possible.
