Winter can be hard. Short days, cold weather, busy schedules, and the pressure of a New Year can quietly drain energy and motivation. For some, it can also trigger Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) — a real form of depression linked to reduced daylight.

Mental well-being is just as important as physical health, especially during the winter. Jason Barr, our Psychological Safety Consultant, shares a few practical ways to support your mindset this season.

You matter. Your mental health matters. And support is always within reach.

Snow shovelling can be harder on your heart than you think.

Sudden, strenuous activity in cold weather puts extra strain on your heart and can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Robin Pohl, Cardiac Rehab Clinical Exercise Physiologist at Milton District Hospital, reminds everyone to pace themselves, take breaks, and listen to their body when shovelling snow.

⚠️ Higher risk if you are:
• An older adult
• Living with high blood pressure or heart disease
• Managing heart failure
• Usually sedentary

🚨 Watch for warning signs:
Chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, or unusual sweating.

âś… Shovel smarter:
Warm up, take breaks, push snow, when possible, dress in layers, stay hydrated, and stop immediately if symptoms appear.

If you’re a high-risk individual, consider asking someone to help, using a snowblower, or hiring a service, your heart is worth it.

Our Emergency Departments are very busy. Patients are prioritized based on the urgency of their condition. Those with less urgent needs can expect longer wait times.

Estimated wait times reflect how long it may take to see a provider. Your full length of stay depends on the care you need and any tests you require.

We appreciate your patience as our teams work hard to care for everyone.
