Music Therapy is the skillful use of music and musical elements by an accredited music therapist to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. (Canadian Association for Music Therapy)

Music is used as a tool to help create a positive change and to achieve specific non-musical goals. It is through the use of music and the therapeutic relationship formed betwe

en the therapist and client that brings about a positive change. Music Therapy is client focused and interventions used are based on the individuals needs, preferences, and abilities. No prior musical training is needed in order to benefit from music therapy services. AJ Music Therapy offers individual, small group, and large group sessions. AJ Music Therapy serves a variety of populations including: developmental disabilities, child development, speech and language impairments, social and behavioural challenges, emotional traumas, physical disabilities, oncology, stroke victims, geriatric care, palliative care, youth-at-risk, and mental health.

Music Therapy can be beneficial for all ages! In this case Music Therapy was beneficial for both Mom and baby in the NICU 💛

Sung’s baby was born prematurely at 24 weeks and was admitted to Surrey Memorial Hospital NICU after birth. Once he was stable 10 weeks later, he was able to receive Music Therapy twice a week and has been receiving therapy for over 2 months. ⁠

The Music Therapist coached Sung on how to offer music safely and how to understand her baby’s reactions to the music. Sung noticed how singing to her baby helped him feel calm and helped him relax into sleep when he was agitated. “I see how music therapy helps him focus and I think it makes him happy and cheers him up,” Sung said. ⁠
⁠
She shared also how she found the Music Therapy sessions not only relaxing but helpful for stemming the loneliness she felt over the 5 months she’s been staying in the NICU with her little one. ⁠

After over 5 months in the NICU and 4 weeks past his due date, Sung’s baby continues to grow and thrive. He will continue receiving Music Therapy until he is ready to go home.⁠

AJ Music Therapy is partnering with Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment again this Fall for morning Tunes 4 Tots classes!

We had such a blast in the spring offering a morning class in Portage La Prairie & are so excited to be partnering with them again!

Classes start on Tuesday September 17th @ 9:45-10:15 for ages 0-4! Contact Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment to register!!

Join us on Tuesdays 9:45am to 10:15am for Tunes 4 Tots. A family music class to introduce littles to music! This class incorporates music and movement, sing alongs, instrumental play, sensory exploration, and tons of fun!
