Results from CFP-funded research on medication optimization for heart-failure patients has captured the attention of the B.C. government.

The pilot randomized control trial (RCT), led by Ricky Turgeon and his research team at the University of British Columbia and funded by CFP’s Innovation Fund, found that even when more than 90% of patients were on guideline-recommended therapies, most were not at target doses.

For longtime Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy supporter Mike Jaczko, giving back to the profession consists of contributing time and money.

Along with a team of educators and experts he helped CFP develop Pharmacy Management in Canada, the country’s only textbook dedicated to pharmacy management, with content written and reviewed by more than 100 experts nationwide.

For longtime Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy supporter Mike Jaczko, giving back to the profession has never been just about writing a cheque.

When pharmacists think about improving medication adherence, they often focus on email reminders, follow-up calls and patient counselling. But for Sarah Kozusko, pharmacist and co-owner of Queen City Wellness Pharmacy in Regina, Saskatchewan, the answer is far more basic: ensuring every one of her patients has food, shelter and safety.

Pharmacists across Canada are uniquely positioned to move beyond prescriptions and address the real-life factors shaping patients’ health—from housing and food stability to transportation and social connection. That was the central message of a recent Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy (CFP) webinar, Mission Possible: How pharmacists can take action on social determinants of health. The webinar featured four speakers who shared practical strategies, research and frontline experiences that are already making a difference.

Researchers at the University of Toronto are working with three community pharmacies on a quality improvement project to help patients with osteoporosis stay on schedule with their denosumab injections. As well, the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy-funded initiative is testing the waters for pharmacists to inject the medication.

At Boyd’s Pharmasave in downtown Halifax, gender-affirming and sexual health services are at the core of community care—not at the margins. The administration of gender- affirming hormones (e.g., testosterone and leuprolide injections) is as accessible as a medication review. On intake forms, all patients are asked their pronouns and gender identity.

Are you providing care for an aging loved one?

Researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto are looking for pharmacists to participate in a study exploring the experiences of healthcare professionals who also serve as unpaid caregivers for aging loved ones.

The study aims to better understand the unique roles, challenges and support needs of healthcare professionals who balance their clinical responsibilities with unpaid caregiving. Findings will help inform more responsive supports, programs and policies aimed at improving the wellbeing of healthcare professionals in caregiving roles.

For the first time, CFP is asking that applications be related to a specific area of research or innovation. CFP arrived at this theme after surveying the pharmacy community twice in 2025 to determine the most pressing needs for research and advancement in pharmacy practice.

This theme for 2026: Enhancing Canadians’ experience with care and access to medication services (e.g., new service areas or delivery models, improving patient access, meeting the needs of under-served patients).
