Dr. Amy Tung, ND

Dr. Amy Tung, ND I help high achieving women optimize their health, manage the hormone changes of perimenopause and menopause.

Licensed ND in Ontario working with women for two decades. I am a board-certified Naturopathic Doctor, writer and speaker, and for almost two decades, I have been helping patients achieve optimal health and wellness through hormonal balance. I have a special interest and passion in hormone health, I work daily with women who experience hormonal concerns. I am certified in hormone replacement (HRT) also known as "bio-identical hormone replacement therapy" (BHRT), and have done further training to be able to prescribe and use these tools. I do regularly use these and other naturopathic tools to heal and educate and help balance hormones for my patients. I currently sit on the board of the Endocrinology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (EndoANP) and have been a board member for four years. The EndoANP supports Naturopathic Doctors in North America who have a special interest in hormone health. I have advanced my knowledge in supportive hormone care and have received the Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Endocrinology designation (based on the standard for the American Board of Naturopathic Endocrinology, which is the certification branch of the Endocrinology Association of Naturopathic Physicians). As a graduate of the four-year program at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto I am registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario, and hold an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo. My approach to health and wellness involves looking at the physical, emotional and mental aspects of a person’s health. As a result of this holistic approach, I have always practiced in integrative medical clinics alongside medical doctors and a team of other health care professionals. I am a wife and busy mom of three young children, and am constantly looking to find balance and harmony in all areas of life. When I’m not with patients, you can find me doing yoga, making healthy recipes or exploring new hiking trails with my family. 5 MASLD Myths You Need to Stop Believing

✔️ Only alcoholics get liver disease → MASLD is NON-alcohol related.
✔️ Thin people can't have MASLD → Metabolic health matters more than weight
✔️ There's nothing you can do → Lifestyle changes can REVERSE early stages of fatty liver but early intervention is key.
✔️ You'll feel symptoms → MASLD is often SILENT until advanced
✔️ It only affects older adults → Kids and young adults can have it also.

Know the facts. Stay proactive. And always consult a healthcare provider — never self-diagnose.

How to Reduce Liver Fat

Simple habits, big liver wins!

Move your body daily, fill your plate with colourful vegetables & fruits and lean proteins , stay hydrated, and cut back on added sugars to your drinks (no sugar added to your drinks like coffee or tea and avoid any fast food or junk foods). These small shifts make a huge difference for your liver health and overall health.

A daily reminder to ourselves:Healing doesn’t happen overnight, but every small, healthy choice is a quiet victory.

Common Signs of MASLD (Formerly known as NAFLD - Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)?

MASLD — short for Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease — often develops silently, but your body may still be sending you early warning signs.

The tricky part? Many people don’t feel any symptoms until the condition has already progressed. That’s why regular check-ups, blood work to review liver function tests and HbA1C, fasting insulin and fasting glucose and most importantly, follow a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise for optimal prevention.

When was your last liver checkup? Schedule one today!

STAGES OF MASLD: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

STAGE 1 - SIMPLE STEATOSIS 🟡 EARLY FATTY LIVER
REVERSIBILITY: ✅✅✅ HIGHLY REVERSIBLE!

WHAT TO DO:
Lifestyle modification
Diet changes
Regular exercise
Weight loss (if needed)

STAGE 2 - MASH 🟠 METABOLIC DYSFUNCTION-ASSOCIATED STEATOHEPATITIS

REVERSIBILITY: ✅✅ REVERSIBLE WITH EFFORT!

WHAT TO DO:
Aggressive lifestyle changes
Medical management of comorbidities
Regular monitoring
Possible medication trials

STAGE 3 - FIBROSIS 🔴 SCARRING DEVELOPS

REVERSIBILITY: ✅ PARTIALLY REVERSIBLE!

WHAT TO DO:
Intensive medical management
Treat underlying conditions aggressively
Consider clinical trials
Regular specialist monitoring

STAGE 4 - CIRRHOSIS ⚫ SEVERE SCARRING

REVERSIBILITY: ⚠️ LIMITED (damage control)

WHAT TO DO:
Hepatologist care essential
Prevent further damage
Screen for liver cancer
Consider transplant evaluation if progressing

THE GOOD NEWS 💚 MOST PEOPLE NEVER PROGRESS!

📊 REALITY CHECK:
80% stay at simple steatosis or MASH
Only 20% develop progressive fibrosis
5-10% develop cirrhosis over 20+ years
Early detection changes everything!
I run often a Fib-4 blood test for patient that gives more information on staging and potential scarring.

YOUR POWER: Every stage before cirrhosis responds to lifestyle changes. You're not powerless!

Let’s Talk About Fatty Liver (MASLD)

Fatty liver, now known as MASLD (Metabolic dysfunction–Associated Steatotic Liver Disease), happens when fat builds up in the liver due to metabolic stress and not alcohol related consumption (cirrhosis) or other condition related to other causes (we also want to rule out Hepatitis for example).

It’s closely linked to:
✨ Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
✨ High cholesterol (high ApoB blood testing)
✨ Weight around the belly (visceral fat)
✨ Poor sleep and stress

Unlike what many think, this isn’t about alcohol but about how your metabolism handles insulin. Understanding MASLD is step one in protecting your liver and reclaiming your health.

Why does weight shift during menopause? Here's what's happening:

1️⃣ Hormonal Shifts in Perimenopause
Fluctuating and lower levels of estrogen = fat moves to your belly instead of hips and thighs.
Important: Get your thyroid checked too. Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's can also cause weight gain. Blood tests that include: TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO, anti-thyroglobulin) are the ones you want to check with your primary care provider.

2️⃣ Muscle Loss
Muscle burns calories and it increases your metabolic rate. So if your muscle mass is good your metabolism is good. But, as we age, we lose muscle in fact the loss starts in our 30's and continues each year. Less muscle = slower metabolism. We counter this with our diet (adequate protein) and resistance training. Download my free protien e-book under "Resources" on my website www.dramytung.com

3️⃣ Lifestyle Factors
Stress due to life's many demands. Poor sleep disrupted by night sweats. Less movement and sedentary lifestyle. These aren't failures—they're normal when life gets busy and sleep gets disrupted during menopause.

4️⃣ Aging
Some changes happen simply because we're getting older. Not everything is menopause-related, but it all happens together in midlife.

Menopause doesn't directly cause weight gain. It causes a shift in WHERE fat is stored and HOW your metabolism works.

Understanding this helps you work WITH your body, not against it.
You're not broken. You're evolving.
