Sarvangasana (Shoulder stand) is a yoga pose where the whole body is balanced on the shoulders. This asana is highly beneficial in maintaining mental and physical health and is also referred as β€˜Queen of asanas’. It helps to cultivate flexibility in chest, nourishes the neck and strengthens the shoulders, core and legs.

In this workshop we will introduce around 15 asanas focused on your shoulders to prepare the body for Shoulder stand . This includes :

Salabhasana (Locust Pose) is an intermediate backbend pose which stretches your entire back, spine, chest and help you to feel rejuvenated and energized.

Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel pose) - The pose Strengthens the arms and wrists, legs, buttocks, abdomen, and spine, it stretches the chest and lungs.

Purvottanasana (Upward Plank Pose ) This asana simultaneously strengthens and stretches your shoulders. It also strengthens the arms.

The focus of the this workshop will be on how to get into shoulder stand safely and comfortably, and then hold it for a longer period of time in a safe and effective way. The workshop will be open for all levels. Students will be given personal attention and specific modifications based on the needs of their bodies.

The class will also entail more detailed breakdown of shoulderstand and preparation in an attempt to help students build a deeper relationship with the postures, their bodies and self-awareness. You will walk away feeling empowered and geared to check alignment and maintain good posture as you go about your daily routine.

Yesterday would have been BKS Iyengar’s 100th birthday. For the last week or so, over a thousand students have gathered to learn, practice yoga, and to honour BKS Iyengar’s legacy.
We had a special practice this morning at Lakeshore yoga.
It was a great class full of joy and good energy. Unfortunately, the teacher forgot to take a picture. πŸ˜•

β€œThis process of relaxing the brain is achieved through asana. We generally think of mind as being in our head. In asana our consciousness spreads throughout the body, eventually diffusing in every cell, creating a complete awareness. In this way stressful thought is drained away, and our mind focuses on the body, intelligence, and awareness as a whole.
This allows the brain to be more receptive, and concentration becomes natural. How to keep the brain cells in a relaxed, receptive, and concentrated state is the art that yoga teaches. You must also remember that meditation (dhyana) is part and parcel of yoga; it is not separate. Yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi, all these are the petals of yoga. There is meditation in everything.”
