September 28 is World Rabies Day!
Did you know that in 2024, there were 91 cases of rabies confirmed in Ontario? The Region of Halton had 3 confirmed rabies cases in 2024 (all from bats).
Rabies vaccines used in Canada protect pets from all strains of rabies. In Ontario, your cat or dog (or ferret!) must be vaccinated for rabies as soon as it is 3 months old. Ontario law requires that even indoor pets need to be vaccinated, and that owners keep their pet’s rabies vaccine up-to-date for their pets entire life. We recommend that dogs and cats, including pets that are strictly indoors, be vaccinated for Rabies due to the incidence of rabies in our community.
If you are concerned about an encounter you or your pet has had with a bat (or other wildlife!) please contact your health care provider, public health unit and veterinarian for next steps.
