We're officially one month away from the Inclusive Fun Fair, happening Saturday, June 7th at Shannon Park! 🎉

This free event held in partnership with the City of Kingston is packed with fun for the whole family: games, live music, a vendor market, a dedicated KIDZONE, and so much more, all in support of building Kingston’s first fully inclusive playground.

Prosthetists create life long relationships with their patients and their support network.

Prosthetists play a crucial role in the lives of people with limb loss or difference. For me, my prosthetist is much more than someone who creates and sells parts to help me walk. What about yours?

The International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020. David Boone wrote about how prosthetists have changed from being mechanics to becoming clinicians. At first, their skills were mostly mechanical but as technology advanced, prosthetists started needing clinical skills too. Now, they must be both technologists and clinicians, evaluating muscle strength, range of motion, rehabilitation potential, and balancing costs for users.

In the 1960s, modular components were introduced, making it faster and easier to create prosthetics. This allowed prosthetists to focus more on understanding the functional needs of users and matching them with the right technologies. Prosthetists are learning to look at all perspectives, including those of the users, for a complete view of outcomes. The development of osseointegration has also changed their roles, requiring them to understand bone physiology and infection control at implant sites. As Professor Mak said, prosthetics and orthotics are "the most clinical of all bioengineering disciplines."

It’s okay if the only thing you want to do today with your prosthesis is stand up at the kitchen sink and wash a few dishes.

It’s okay if your main goal is to make it to the stove, or to the bathroom, or just stand and prep something at the counter.

You don’t have to walk a mile or go to the gym to make your lower limb prosthesis “worth it.”

For many lower limb amputees, these seemingly small activities—cooking, cleaning, doing the basics—are actually huge.

They require balance, endurance, and confidence.

And they can be incredibly meaningful steps toward independence.

If you choose to wear a prosthesis, what matters most is that it fits you properly, that you have secure suspension, and that the alignment supports you in the positions you use most, especially standing still.

It’s all about safety and reducing the risk of falls.

A well-aligned, properly suspended prosthesis helps protect your sound side, reduces socket discomfort, and improves overall stability, even if you’re not walking far.

Wearing properly fitting shoes also plays a key role in stability, comfort, and safety whether you’re walking, standing, or navigating steps.

Some of us live in places where even just getting down a step or two safely is necessary to reach your car, reach the sidewalk, get the mail, get into your yard, or head out into the community.

We are all different.

Talk to your prosthetist and physical therapist about what you want to be able to do.

Your prosthetic setup and physical therapy goals should reflect your life and your unique needs.

April is Limb Loss & Limb Difference Awareness Month, a time to recognize the strength and resilience of those living with amputations and limb differences. 🦾🧡

This month is about more than awareness. It is an opportunity to celebrate amputees' accomplishments, highlight their challenges, and advocate for their rights and interests.

For more than 100 years, The War Amps has been at the forefront of helping amputees through vital programs and services like CHAMP, advocating for amputees’ rights, and offering peer support.

Are you an upper limb prosthesis user? 🦾

Researchers from the University of Washington, Virginia Commonwealth University and Hanger Clinic are conducting a study to better understand the attention and mental effort involved in using a prosthetic limb and are looking for volunteers.

The goal is to create a simple, effective questionnaire that helps clinicians and researchers truly capture the experience of prosthesis use.
