Most Mental Illnesses Arise Without Family History
Most mental illnesses don’t just follow family lines, according to a massive Danish study.
Examining over 3 million people, researchers found that the vast majority of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression cases occur without close relatives having the same diagnosis.

The study highlights the unpredictable and multifactorial nature of mental health disorders.
Even in high-risk families, most individuals remain unaffected.
These insights could reduce stigma and support more nuanced mental health policies.
