Unachievable expectation that your professional puts on you and your horse, yet they dont follow their own rules

So often i come across posts and I just feel yeah it all sounds nice yet in reality can that be achieved are they asking the impossible and the one that is doing the rounds is asking for a belly lift and declaring this is where your horses back should be when riding like 🤔

Its an impossibility and especially when the following pics are the same dysfunction which prevents the horses lifting its back is still there but the horse has no choice because we are activating the reflex points (often long spiels about consent and choice follow, erm yep no consent no choice when you are activating a reflex piont the brain isnt even involved at the initial stages ).

I never do a belly lift to achieve a lift i do it to look for dysfunction and if you are only focused on the lift then you may just miss the reason why the horse struggled in the first breath.

We do know how horses breathe right?? I mean breathwork is a hot topic everywhere yet the simple function of the breath is interrupted if we keep things up,
Up and out, down and inward is the rythum of breath if we only keep the horse at the up stage then well we are not only impeding them physically but mentally aswell, and we wonder why some horses hate it.

Do you know how a lift looks, bellies blowing out, lumbars roached, hind ends tucked under are, flanks sunk in is not a success its an issue that hasn't been addressed and will never be addressed by sticking a hoof pick in their sensitive areas. We cannot just lift away pain!!

What are reflex points ?? They are there to keep the horse safe, if activated they have no control over the reaction but the brain will receive a signal and if the irritant i.e our poky fingers do not stop the brain will initiate a further conscious reaction like a kick up or a bite, so what has the horse learned ??? Do you think the body will process and use the information in a positive way.

The lift even if perfect may be achieved but add negative forces such as a saddle and rider then how can the the horse then be in the same place that it was without the added pressure, was your saddle fitted to a lifted back ?? Does your saddle now fit if like in real life horse nor human walks around in a constant state of over active core, normal is not buff.

Vertical lift is a whole body action not a poke in the girth area and blinkering eyes just to the thoracic area, it comes from everywhere working together but a back like a cat stretch yoga pose is not an 24/7 action its a task which is doomed to fail.

This is a repost(ish) but well worth repeating. Many of you have heard me harp on harness fit time and again. Having spent decades evaluating harness fit in working dogs of all types with thermal imaging (as well as having years of working and active dog experience combined with a strong biomechanics knowledge base) using front-clipping or "Gentle Leader" type harnesses only guarantee more structural stress in active dogs that makes for more work for me and other chiro/sports med colleagues. PLEASE only use harnesses that fit with proper ergonomics! [NOTE: I've tweaked the English & syntax in the added-on description below so it might read a little differently.]

"All dog owners should know this fact! A harness like this is a terrible injustice to your pet!! AVOID USING THIS TYPE OF HARNESS !

In a dog's forward movement, a harness with a tape that crosses its chest from side to side hinders it in the same way humans would bother going hiking with an elastic band holding their arms. Physiological movement of the front extremity is prohibited. Just like rubber would inhibit the pendular movement of our ARMS.

Thanks to the "Study of Canine Movement at the University of Jena", we now know that in the dog, the center of rotation of the front limb is at the top of the scapula, but in the human the center of rotation in the arm is in the shoulder (head of the humerus). Jena's study demonstrates, among other things, the importance of scapular movement for dog locomotion. Now we understand the importance of taking into account the free movement of the dog's shoulder when choosing a chest harness.
That means there SHOULDN'T be bands across the scapular (orange) area, and they shouldn't cross the chest side to side either.

From the point of view of biomechanics and physiotherapy, it is recommended not to choose getting harnesses that have a strap that goes through the chest laterally, or that have straps that touch or press the scapula.

Always lean towards harness models with ERGONOMIC design, to allow maximum freedom of movement for your dog, improve his well-being and safety during his walk.

Do you enjoy making your own fruit and vegetable juices in a juicer? These home-made juices are packed with nutrition and leave behind a considerable amount of fibre and pulp.

I take this pulp and add it to a little soaked beet pulp with a handful of wheat bran or wheat germ, mix well, and the horses love it!! I don't add any citrus peel as this is not an equine favorite but include all greens, beets, carrots, tomatoes, sweet fruits, cucumbers etc.

We get a lot of inquiries about horses that are stocking up, meaning that they have fluid-filled swollen fetlocks (edema). This is particularly common in the winter time when they eat the same amount of food as the rest of the year but are moving less in cold weather.

It's can also be common with horses that are stalled overnight and the lack of movement causes fluid retention so they are stocked up in the morning. Excess fluid or edema is also common in the sheath and in the udder.

This kind of edema is a metabolic problem and as the metabolism slows down, circulation decreases, and fluids accumulate.

So what do you do?

Low sugar hay, no grain, plenty of movement, and no overnight confinement is key.

Adding Vitamin B6 will help to balance insulin levels, reduce fluids, and support hormones; while the homeopathic Metabolism Drops promote a normal appetite and encourage weight loss.

An amazing conference coming up!!

I am honored to be speaking among such a fantastic lineup of speakers for this upcoming conference.

"The Holistic Horse Conference - Your Gateway to Natural Equine Care" is online and will be hosted by Dr. Jeff Grognet, Veterinarian, and Joan Ranquet, Animal Communicator.

They have gathered 22 experts in the world of holistic horse care, who will be talking about some rare and exciting topics.

My topic will be focused on Taking a Holistic Approach to Leaky Gut. I will talk about how leaky gut happens, misconceptions about the equine diet, how to detect imbalances, and much more.

This conference starts February 1st and runs for six days. New webinars are released daily.

Hope to see you there!

Bot fly larvae can cause such grief with our horses. The more we know, the more we can do better at trying to maintain healthy horses to be less of a target for these pests

I hate bot larvae.
I see them quite often at whole horse dissections and when the larvae detach from the stomach wall, they leave behind deep holes.

These holes are about 2 mm deep.

The part of the stomach that we see is the non glandular part. It is the upper part and is not acid secreting.
You can just about see the glandular part which is pinkish in the photo.

Bot larvae seem to choose the non glandular part but I do see them at the margin between these 2 parts which is called the Margo plicata. Rarely they are found in the glandular layer as that part has a very low pH is acidic due to hydrochloride acid.

I really feel bot latvae are a problem because when they detach, the holes left behind are at risk from the acid splashing up onto that area. This I believe could destroy tissue and cause ulcers.
